Georgia BCS talk bugs Miles

Mark Richt has no problem with Georgia's potential to make it to the BCS title game. But LSU coach Les Miles took slight umbrage with the possibility a team that did not have to win the SEC title game could make it to New Orleans for the BCS title game. certainly think the champions in that position should be allowed every opportunity to play in the most prestigious bowl and certainly be the highest ranked," Miles said. "I would like to envision an opportunity for the team from Louisiana that, if fortunate enough to win the conference championship and who played the schedule that we did with the victories that we've achieved and not lost a game in regulation yet, to have that opportunity."

Georgia is playing really good and is deserving of the NC game. What is so special about Miles and his LSU, home ground? I believe Georgia would beat the crap out of them at THIS moment.

And this - the coach that Michigan wants?

November 28, 2007  06:53 AM ET

Why wouldn't he be upset? If you don't win your own Conference....Why would you be able to play in the National Title Game???? What is the problem here?

November 28, 2007  08:24 AM ET

"not lost in regulation"??? I get what he's saying about the conference championship but last I checked a loss is a loss...

November 28, 2007  08:24 AM ET

LSU never lost a game in regulation. What spin is that????
You need to find a LB and DE that want to play hard.

November 28, 2007  08:31 AM ET

As much as I think Miles is the most overrated coach in all of College Football, he does have a valid point here. No doubt im my mind that if you don't win your conference, you should not be given the right to play for all the marbles. Not hating against Georgia, they have found a groove here towards the end of the season and have played sound football, however; two losses (one being a blowout), and no conference title = no soup for you one year!

November 28, 2007  08:46 AM ET

Whether he has a valid point or not, it is always distasteful as a coach to try to whine your way into a Bowl.

Bottom Line: If you want to play for the NC, the first step is don't lose.

November 28, 2007  08:54 AM ET

It's when you lose that matters in the BCS, Les. Georgia's last loss was months ago and that's why they are going to a BCS bowl, while you will have to settle for the Citrus.

November 28, 2007  08:56 AM ET

Miles is an idiot. He was an idiot at OSU and now he's an idiot at LSU, but I do agree with him regarding the conference play..........Undefeated in regulation....So, I guess they only practice to play 60 min's a game, and he only coaches for 60 min's. What he said in that press conference is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. LSU fans better hope he goes to Michigan. Give it 3 more years and you will be itching to get'em out.

November 28, 2007  09:16 AM ET

I don't think he's an idiot, Sully, but I think he's a touch not right in the head. Like some kind of mad genius thing. Streak of narcissism maybe.

Good coaches are hard to come by these days and Les has proven himself at Ok State (upsetting OU twice in the few years he was there) and at LSU.

November 28, 2007  09:19 AM ET

Yeah bring him to UM so the Bucks can beat up on him too!

November 28, 2007  09:19 AM ET

You have got to be kidding me... Have not lost in regulation... but have lost... UGA deserves a BCS bowl... Therefore we will get one... And I have a few LSU fans as friends who are very thankful to be playing UT instead of UGA

November 28, 2007  09:20 AM ET

The BCS has not close a loophole that is still there. Teams that don't win their own conference playing for the National Championship. It happen in 2001 with Nebraska, and in 2003 with Oklahoma. Right now Gerogia is No.4 in the BCS. Yet they wouldn't win the SEC because they didn't win thieir division in the SEC because Tennessee beat them. Should Missouri and West Virginia both lose, Georgia will be in line with Ohio State for the National Championship. That's not fair at all.
As for Les Miles, the bottom line is LSU lost 2 games where his defense was score at will by Kentucky and Arkansas. So Les Miles should shut up.

November 28, 2007  09:34 AM ET

"Should Missouri and West Virginia both lose, Georgia will be in line with Ohio State for the National Championship."

That's not necessarily true. LSU could (not "definitely WOULD", but "could") jump UGa in the BCS polls with an impressive win over TN. How? Just ask Florida.

Last year, FL was ranked #4 going into the SEC title game. The same day, #2 USC lost. Most people thought that #3 Michigan would move up to #2. But since Michigan didn't play that day, and since FL did play (and won the SEC title game), the pollsters moved FL up to #2. That was good enough to get them into the BCS title game.

The same thing could happen this year. If #1 Mizzou and #2 WVU both lose, then #3 Ohio State would move up to #1. The only question would be if the pollsters would be impressed enough by an LSU thumping of TN to move LSU up over top of UGa, like they did with FL over Michigan last year.

We can argue all day over who is better right now, LSU or UGa. We could argue over who deserves to play OSU if the above scenario unfolded. But we can't argue that the possibility exists that LSU COULD sneak into the title game.

Of course, if LSU loses to TN (and the way both teams are playing right not, that's not a stretch at all), then the point becomes moot.

November 28, 2007  09:35 AM ET

"You have got to be kidding me... Have not lost in regulation... but have lost... UGA deserves a BCS bowl..."

True #7, the issue is not whether Georgia deserves a BCS bowl bid, which they clearly do, but whether they deserve a BCS title shot if both Missouri and WVa lose this weekend.

I agree with Les Miles about Georgia but not about LSU. No two-loss team belongs in a title game, especially not teams that lost to South Carolina and Kentucky, respectively.

November 28, 2007  09:41 AM ET

All hat, no cattle.

November 28, 2007  09:41 AM ET

Meant also to say that Jaxman's point is well-put. If LSU beats Tennessee, there is a good possibility they will vault UGA in the computer rankings, rendering the whole discussion moot.

November 28, 2007  09:58 AM ET

My blog is about this.

Firstly, WVU will probably beat Pitt.

Secondly, the BCS weasels would rank LSU above UGA anyways.

Thirdly, Miles is complaining about the schedule like UGA plays in the Sun Belt or something. C'mon Miles, UGA has played virtually all of the same opponents that you have with the exception of VT (whom UGA beat in a bowl).

November 28, 2007  10:19 AM ET

West Virginia will not lose to Pitt... That should end this discussion!

November 28, 2007  10:24 AM ET

Regardless of what Miles has said about the "not lost in regulation" crap...the fact still remains that Georgia did NOT qualify for the SEC conference game and therefore should NOT be eligible for National Championship game. That priviledge should be reserved only for those teams who have won their conference...PERIOD!!!

November 28, 2007  10:28 AM ET

Les, Les, Les....your whining is so lame compared to Urban's from last year. At least he didn't start so early and didn't have to split hairs over 'regulation' losses versus 'overtime'. Either way, this is the way the game is rigged. Some conferences don't even have playoffs and don't play every other team in that conference - should they be banned? If Georgia happens to 'back into' the BCS Championship, so be it. They'll acquit themselves well and would have a good chance of beating whoever they play - certainly an Ohio State.

Point is, it's all for naught. WVA won't lose and UT will show the country that a poorly coached team, regardless of how much talent it has, is a poorly coached team (and I'm not talking about Phil Fulmer). LSU's a seven point favorite? It's a gift. Take UT with the points and don't be surprised when they 'blow-by' the Bayou Bengals by at least that much.
