Mankins plays good soldier for Solder

08:00 AM ET 05.24 | Mammoth Patriots draft pick Nate Solder received a big boost from an unlikely source. That's because when Solder was drafted by the Pats, they gave him Logan Mankins' number. Yes, the same Mankins who sat out part of last year in a contract dispute. And Mankins was more than happy to offer advice. Seriously. ... "He seems like a great guy. I gave him a little advice, and tried to help him out the best I can in the situation we're in." How does this happen? "Well, this time, the Patriots gave him my number," Mankins said. "I'm more than willing to help any young guy who needs anything. Look, he's in a tough situation right now. He doesn't know what's going on. He has no coaches to talk to. He's just trying to make it in this league." Mankins wouldn't offer specifics on what they discussed. But the fact that it even happened is noteworthy.

Not a good sign Logan when they give your number to a rookie

May 24, 2011  08:16 AM ET

Oh my!

Not a good sign when the Pats front office does something like that. Sounds like he's gone. I hope they have other plans for protecting Brady while Solder matures.

Bye, bye, Logan.

LoL I was wondering why you guys all thought it was a bad thing that they were talking on the phone

the story also hinted that mankin and the pats may have made some progress on a long term deal; with this kid, light is probably more expendable...

yeah solder/vollmer/kazcur look to be at OT
resigning Mankins would be HUGE and the right guard position would be in question but a good healthy competition in training camp

koppen has a few more good years in him

Dang. I do believe I misinterpreted that. That's 2 mistakes I've made this year. Not like me at all. (But the world WILL end in 5 months. I'm sure of that one.)

Does that constitute Player - Management contact?

I think the draft took place in that brief interval after one judge voided the lockout and another judge re-instated it. Sort of like when the back judge throws a flag and the zebras all huddle up and decide to pick up the flag and say "no foul." Except that the timeout in the courts last 6 months and a bunch of lawyers get rich at our expense (since fans pay the bills.) At least we don't have to watch Flo and the Gecko sell insurance while the courts make up their minds, though.

another good trade for Raiders Mankin and Seymor for Solder

May 24, 2011  04:17 PM ET

The Steelers will take him. No problem.

Mankins has been franchise tagged...he's not a free agent, at least not under the last version of the CBA rules

With Connolly at right guard they did pretty good last year. I think the linemen you mention with Connolly it would be a pretty decent crew for whenever they start playing games again
