08:10 AM ET 05.24 | A six-game losing streak may be the least of the A's worries. They've also got a serious rift brewing between manager Bob Geren and interim closer Brian Fuentes. Fuentes blasted Geren after Monday night's 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, in which Fuentes (1-7) faced two hitters in the eighth inning and took his fourth loss in his past four appearances. His seven losses lead all American League relievers. ... He said he was shocked when the phone rang in the seventh inning and his name was called."I thought the games in San Francisco were some unorthodox managing, but I thought it was maybe the National League, maybe that had something to do with it," Fuentes said. "But tonight was pretty unbelievable."

If you can't hold a 7th inning lead, why should you be a closer? I've seen your stuff & I don't think Mariano when I watch it.

1-7............last 4 appearances, 4 losses. Yep, he knows pretty much everything.

Fuentes had a nice run of saves from '05 to '09 but has never been a lights out guy (High ERA).

It's coming back to haunt him...

If he wasn't on Oakland - who can't seem to keep a Closer healthy - he wouldn't even sniff the 9th inning (unless it was mop up time).

Right now - I think Franklin - maybe we can swap relievers? Change of scenery might do them both good.

I don't know, Lou. I see your point, but I'm not sure Fuentes would fit in St. Louis. Can you imagine how berserk TLR would go if Fuentes publicly criticized him?

Pitch when they tell you and shut up.

I kinda agree with Fuentes, Geren is kind of a moron as a manager, with ever-changing outfield rotations and no idea of how to manage a pitching staff. However, the dumbest thing that Geren is currently doing is continuing to trot Fuentes out there, whether it's as the closer or in any other role. He's saving games all right, just for the wrong team... Why not use Balfour as the "interim" closer, I haven't seen anyone come close to hitting him!!!

No doubt. Wahhhh I need to get 6 outs!!!!

Fuentes is a cry baby.

May 24, 2011  02:12 PM ET

i'm confused. i thought his job was to take the ball when the manager asks him to.

May 24, 2011  02:37 PM ET

Ok, he gets the call, goes out to pitch, holds/saves the lead, and does his job to get a W. Where's the problem, Fuentes?

May 24, 2011  02:56 PM ET

OMG, the manager actually asked you to PITCH? Gee, you'd think after 15 years in MLB sissy boy Brian might realize that from time to time he'd actually be asked to earn some of the inexcusably high salary he's being paid to whine. For a guy who's mostly collected splinters throughout his career he should get up and shut up when he's asked to. Wimp.

Whether Green is a mental midget or not is irrelevant.
I remember when the Mariners used Randy Johnson to come out of the bullpen on one day of rest, to get the W against the Yankees and advance to the ALCS - He didn't cry, he ate it up!
Fuentes needs to stop with that 'entitlement' crap and play WHEN they use him, instead of whining about HOW they use him.

Soo true! For the money they are paying him he should be ready to do whatever is asked of him. I am not a big Geren fan, but Fuentes has been very unspectacular all year and needs to start producing before he can start calling anybody else out.

Just take Edinson Volquez as an example. He has performed horribly and had the nerve to call his team out for not scoring enough runs. B-bye Edinson and when the A's bullpen gets healthier I could see the same fate for Fuentes.

I'd of blasted Green too. Brians point was "I suck why would you put me in there? I'm tired of losing you Dumb ****."

Blame the manager because you can't pitch? Time for a different career, mayhap as a Walmart Greeter. They hire old guys.
