Black ponders moving fences at Petco

08:12 AM ET 05.25 | There's no doubt PETCO swallows up balls that, as Ryan Ludwick said over the weekend, would be "bombs other places." On Monday, Bud Black was asked what his stance was on moving in the PETCO Park fences. "I think there's room for discussion," Black said, choosing his words carefully before taking a long pause and repeating himself. "I just think there's room to talk about it in our park." Black didn't expand on what he said, but he hasn't been one to typically discuss the park's dimensions, even to that extent. The topic has been brought up in recent days, however, and mostly avoided. Black doesn't think the park, which is notoriously difficult to hit for power in, has psyched out his players.

Help your hitters, tick off your pitchers

I would think that decision would be more up to the owners or general manager then to the manager.

Well, they're a "pitcher's" team in large part because of the ball park. Make Petco look like Camden Yards and it will be amazing how quickly the pitchers suck and the hitters learn how to hit.

The numbers would be better, my sister could hit the ball out of Camden.

Never mind Petco. How about Citi Field?

The the Padres are really going to get that butt kicked. The other teams will be teeing off on their sorry selves.

Good Point Pontiff. Citi Field is crazy senile old Freddy Wilpon's tribute to Ebbets Field. By the way Freddy, David Wright was a Superstar at Shea, where his 2005-2008 averages were as follows: BA: .311, HR's: 29, RBI's: 112, K's: 115. Since Citi, his BA is down 18 pts, HR's down 10, RBI's down 30 and K's up 35 !! You think it's time to move in the fences at Citi yet, Crazy Freddy ???

It's not the park BB.(brain) The Padres lost a lot of players during this offseason - remember?
I watched the Mariners series there at Petco over the weekend and the M's put up 35 strike outs plus scored 14 points to the Padre's 2 points - TOTAL!
The Padres simply are not the same team they've been the last few years.
And it's not just the hitting either, they messed up on the base paths, they botched simple fielding plays, their pitchers let Seattle's lineup score 4-0, 4-1, 6-1 victories on them.
News Flash Mr. Black - That's not the parks fault dude.

No, that would be trading the only quality hitter to Beantown. A-Gone was their only offense. If the players cant find the gap, I doubt moving the fences in would help their hitters much.

Call me old school, but i believe if a pitcher makes a mistake, he needs to pay for it.

It wouldn't matter. Even if the Padres raise their offensive numbers, they'll still trade away any talent they get. What a joke of a franchise. I can't believe some people down here actually root for this team when all they do is trade their talent

Petco is fine. Most of the other parks need to move their fences out.

Comerica is a "pitcher's park" too. But Miggy Cabrera does quite fine there. And did well in Miami to boot. No excuses for ballparks.

With all the hype and attention that home runs get, it's friggin' stupid that there are no standard dimensions for the outfield in MLB.
