Wings could chase Bieksa to replace Rafalski

08:27 AM ET 05.25 | Brian Rafalski had his critics in Detroit, but the defenseman won't be easy to replace. Few, if anybody, could see that one coming. But this does create a unique opportunity for the Wings. They suddenly have $6 million (Rafalski's salary cap number) to play with in the free agent market. Who do they go and get on July 1? I suggest Vancouver's Kevin Bieksa (but I'd be surprised if the Canucks don't somehow retain him). Maybe Phoenix's Ed Jovanovski, who may want to return close to home (he's from Windsor). Or one of three free agent defensemen Montreal has (Canton's James Wisnewski, Andrei Markov, or Roman Hamrlik). But, really, it's not a great group of free agent defensemen this summer.

just forget about the top two...

plus I don't think it's Holland's style to go after restricted free agents that the team has plans to re-sign. He doesn't come from the Kevin Lowe school of management

The Cannots have stupid depth and as such may have a slightly cheaper Dman available for Detroit

I still can't believe Rafalski is going to walk away from $6 mil. Meanwhile Redden is happily taking his along with his bus rides in Hartford.

I'll take any of the above. But ... I won't shy away from Bekisa either.

I believe it's because he's limping away and not walking Nard.

Yes, that. Better he lets the Wings start working now to fill the spot rather than come back, put his $6 mil on the books, and become hobbled and hunched on the DL bench within the first month of the season. Sad to seem him go, but he's really helping the Wings out.

Kasibe would be a great addition to the Wings.

Any chance they offer him a job in the organization?

Can'tucks will pay through the nose if he keeps playing, and they win. There'll be a few that set sail - Torres and Bakesi, uh-uh.

I'd even trade Byff-soc'em, for him though, and then sign him for 5 for $7 M ea. And then I'd stay in the Eastern C, permanently.

So long Oprah (would it were so) - don't let the door hit ya, ha,ha.

Dont laugh Kaberle might be a good fit in Detroit at the right price.

"Chase" isn't the proper word to describe the Red Wings' potential involvement with Bieksa. If provided the opportunity, Ken Holland would offer a fair contract to Bieksa and it would be up to him to take it over what other teams offer. Ken Holland doesn't need to chase anybody.

They need an abrasive presence. Baksie would be ideal.

You mean the league minimum? What else would you pay for a guy who doesn't hit and has plenty of bad habits.
