08:12 AM ET 05.27 | When Scott Cousins collided with Buster Posey Wednesday night at home, many saw it, simply, as a baseball play. Cousins told reporters he thought the play, which provided the Marlins with their winning run, was clean. "In my mind, if I changed something, we might not have won the game," he said. "It's a dangerous sport, and that [Home-plate contact] is one of the most unfortunate things in baseball. A line drive off a pitcher. Outfield collisions. Things that make you cringe when you watch." Posey's agent, Jeff Berry, is determined to have the rules changed to prevent such collisions. He reached out to Major League Baseball and the players' association Thursday, ESPN reported. ... "It's stupid. I don't know if this ends up leading to a rule change, but it should."

Posey's agent is stupid!
The rules are fine for how many thousands of players through the years but they have to change for his client?

Plays at the plate are part of the game and when a player gets injured it is unfortunate but it's not worth a rule change. If the runner was the one to get hurt would the agent still be looking to have a rule change?

Not only are they part of the game, they are the single most exciting plays in baseball. It is unfortunate when catchers, in this case Posey, get injured.

Throwing a guy out at the plate, so many things have to get executed perfectly and that does make it great to watch, even when it's against your team, but it is a shame when any player be it the catcher or runner gets a serious injury.

Haha... I still remember breaking a first-baseman's arm in little league, because the prick straddled the bag. He did it purposely to make runners peal around him while trying to leg out grounders. After being thrown out once while trying to avoid a collision, my old man told me to run through him next time, and I did. The other coach tried having me thrown out, and promised to have me removed from the league when I told him I ran through on purpose. He failed at both, because the bases belong to the runners.
If your pretty little frame can't handle a collision with a grown man, get out the way.

I don't like the shoulder first play at the plate, but it's been a part of baseball forever. It's unfortunate that Posey got hurt so bad. A broken bone and three ligaments will make for a long rehab. But it is what it is. That's the risk you take when you play the position.

Maybe they should change to T-ball. That way hitters won't get hurt by getting hit by a pitch.

Actually my dad would've told me the same thing.... You don't let some **** block the base, especially first. Run his **** over, in fact is the ump was doing his job he'd have called interference when it first happened.

I think the rules in this area are fine. If I'm not mistaken, it's against the rules for the catcher to block the plate unless he has possession of the ball. Once the catcher has the ball he can, by choice either block the plate or not while making the tag. If he does not posses the ball he's not supposed to interfere with the baserunner. The runner is entitled to make a run at home plate whether the catcher is in the way or not. The catcher is adequately protected by the rules in my opinion and it's his choice as to what injury risk he wants to take.
