Wings may lose another assistant

08:25 AM ET 05.27 | Change is obviously coming to the Detroit blue line, and it is halfway to a significant shift in the coaching staff, too. The Red Wings have offered an extension to assistant coach Paul MacLean, but they are prepared to give him time to consider other options. ... Dallas, Florida, Minnesota, New Jersey and Ottawa are all looking for bench bosses. MacLean, 53, interviewed last summer with Columbus, which ended up hiring Scott Arniel. Holland said no team has called to ask permission to speak with MacLean, but it's not uncommon for teams to wait until June before looking at candidates. The Wings parted ways last week with assistant coach Brad McCrimmon, who took over when Todd McLellan left to take the head coaching job in San Jose three years ago.

A bit of a non-story. He either gets an offer for a head coaching job somewhere or he stays put in Detroit. Looks like a win-win in the short term.

MacLean deserves a shot at a head job if he wants it. McCrimmon, not so much from my regard. I know that, in certain polls, McCrimmon is thought of as one of the top assistants next in line for a head job, but if he took over for McLellan as the say he didn't do as well with special teams. I don't know much about assistant coaches and their duties/abilities, but this is how it looks to me at first brush.
Pardon my slight digression, but why is it that when I Google "Stanley Cup" the second result the search brings up is the Penguins' team site? That seems awfully presumptuous.

Try googling 'Santorum'....
A good coder can influence the results on most search engines.

So the take away message here is that if you are an assistant coach with the Red Wings and your last name begins with Mc or Mac, you won't stay for long? ;)
Where did McCrimmon go? He was one of my favorite Flyers from the 80's. He and Mark Howe were one of the best D duos at the time.

Jon Stewart had some fun with that the other day.

Back in the day he was usually picked in the playoff office hockey pool.
He was the master of the 3rd assist and the fanny pat to the goal scorer.....

It was a mutual decision that the two parties would part ways. On his part McCrimmon is looking for a bigger seat behind a bench and the Red Wings...well, who knows, maybe they are clearing out assistants to make room for Rafalski, Osgood and Draper. ;-)

He can take the head coaching job in the 'Peg...A former Jet (40 goal / 100 plus point man) running the team would create even more storylines than there already are...That is, if it ever happens.

Paul MacLean had some nice years in Winnipeg, but after leaving, he went on record making disparaging comments about the city and the team. He wasn't paid very well as a Jet, and though salaries from the 1980s aren't published, he supposedly made much more total money in the last three years of his career with Detroit and St Louis than he did in 7 years with the Jets. Even then, it was far from the millions players make today, which is why he works as a coach.

Glad he did too. The world needs to learn more about what some people think of the former PA senator.

Charlie Huddy was always one of my best late round playoff pool picks. The guy got assisits and second assists like no buddies business in the playoffs. I think i had him as a second to last or last pick for about three years before the Pals caught on.

even a head coaching job isn't sure to lure him. If I was an assistant in Detroit I would leave for a good opportunity to head coach...I wouldn't leave for a Florida or Columbus, that's for sure.
