Why drivers fear Indy 500 restarts

08:12 AM ET 05.28 | Drivers at Sunday's Indianapolis 500 had better hold onto their steering wheels a little tighter, because their rides will be bumpier than usual on restarts. The IZOD IndyCar series mandated double-file restarts for the 2011 season, but since the series??? first four races were on road courses, the full effect of this type of restart has not been felt yet on an oval track. NASCAR has been using double-file restarts for a couple of seasons, and drivers think that has made races more exciting for fans. But some IndyCar drivers are worried. The problem lies in Turn 1, as cars get up to 200 mph and are jockeying for position. The turn itself is tight for cars running only one wide, but it will be made even tighter as cars line up two wide into that first curve.

These are arguably the best drivers in the world, and they haven't figured out how to go into a turn two wide. Granted I haven't seen any Indy Car racing since the opener, in which lap 1 turn 1 they had a 5 car wreck, but come one people it's called lifting the throttle to make sure you make it through!

Don't follow Indy much but I think that it's so hard to pass in these races that they don't want to give up one spot.

More manners with Indy cars knowing one little nudge can take both cars out.

An Indy Car is just a pregnant roller skate. It has no practical application in real life and I do not believe that the technology of the car or the race contributes one iota to everday practicality. The 500 is as spectacle. It is purely entertainment and they need all the help they can get as once the cars stream out on the track it's like watching paint dry. At least on a road course there is some action in the corners. Oval Indy cars just do not have anything to offer the average car race fan except the start.

Just because they line up that way doesn't mean they have to enter the turn that way. Use some sense early then go for it late in the race.

That what A.J.Foyt used to say RZ, then when they crashed, everybody went a different way to avoid him, he was and still a bull. LMAO

The big difference, I think, is that a stock car (assuming that NASCAR actually races stock cars) can take a bit of banging and an Indy car can take none. After the first couple of restarts the guys that can't adapt will probable be out of the race.

Did you notice how Kyle and Kevin played nice yesterday. Then when Harvick dropped back a little Kahne took him out.

Whoever that is it would be best for them the National Guard doesn't find out who or where they are -- the Guard may just turn that site into a smokin' hole in the earth ...
