Louisiana State coach Les Miles might have moved one step closer Wednesday to succeeding Lloyd Carr as Michigan's coach. LSU granted U-M athletic director Bill Martin permission to talk with Miles about the job, LSU assistant AD Herb Vincent told the Free Press. Miles has a $1.25-million buyout that applies to taking the U-M job. LSU is expected to present Miles with a lucrative offer to remain in Baton Rouge.

Home is where the heart is. See ya miles.

I really think UM should persuade Lloyd Carr to stay a few more years. He has done great things for OSU.

In all honesty, he is a good coach and if he does go to Meechigan, I look forward to seeing a renewed rivalry with a new coach that will hopefully bring UM back into the elite class of teams. As much fun as it is to see OSU stomp all over UM, and it is, it would be nice to see competitive games between the two schools again.

Miles would be nuts to leave. Saban cant get the recruits anymore from Louisiana where most of the best talent has come from and Miles wont be able to get those recruits either once he craps on LSU and leaves. He'll be gettting good classes on paper but they will just be big slow guys like the Michigan teams are now and most of the bigen

November 29, 2007  08:01 AM ET

if UM offers Miles a whole lot of money, i'll think he'll go....no matter what he has said about loving LSU and his players and blah blah blah, money talks and (most of the time) the coaches answer. :-)

November 29, 2007  08:40 AM ET

Tough one to call on this one. LSU can match any amount of money that Michigan throws at him, so it won't be over money.

Just in time for the media to start stirring the pot with a big game coming up for us this weekend.

November 29, 2007  08:49 AM ET

If its not about money, then he is gone. I truly think he loves living and coaching in LA, but everyone knows where his heart is. LSU knew this when they hired him that this day might come.

November 29, 2007  08:50 AM ET

It's tough to call if the SEC ego is involved. But Miles is as good as gone, now its time you LSU boys put a real coach in his place: Bo Pelini, an Ohio State Buckeye, woot woot

"Just in time for the media to start stirring the pot with a big game coming up for us this weekend."

Huh?!

Are you suggesting it is not relevant sports news when the coach of a football that has been at No. 1 in the BCS rankings for several weeks this year has asked for and obtained permission to talk about coaching another program?

Don't blame the messenger. Blame your football coach.

November 29, 2007  08:53 AM ET

Sorry, edit: "coach of a football TEAM"

November 29, 2007  08:55 AM ET

I don't really understand why either LSU or Michigan would want Miles, he's already proven he's a terrible coach. LSU should not have lost one game this year, not to mention how many close calls they had. Miles simply can't coach.

November 29, 2007  08:59 AM ET

As a Michigan fan, I dont want Miles. Give me someone who has overacheived, Miles definitely has not done that in his career. When you have that much talent, the stakes are higher. I just don't think you can say Miles got the absolute most out of his players. I would rather steal Cincy's, Cal's, or Mizzou's coach. All overachievers. I might be the only one in Ann Arbor with this opinion, but I don't think so... I think there might be a few of us, luckily for me, I think Carr and maybe even Martin are two of them.

November 29, 2007  09:01 AM ET

I'd be careful, Les Miles might be over-rated. LSU was a good team when he arrived.

Strap - I hope OSU doesn't humiliate the Big 10 this year with their bowl performance.

November 29, 2007  09:04 AM ET

Michigan should hire the coach from Appalachian State.

November 29, 2007  09:08 AM ET

Lol no dont worry penn we already got all the humiliation out when we laid the smack down on your sorry squad

November 29, 2007  09:15 AM ET

Les is not overrated. If he could take a team like Oklahoma State and upset Oklahoma twice in his four year tenure - once on Owen Field, he's a pretty decent coach. We were thrilled to see him pack his bags.

November 29, 2007  09:28 AM ET

I think Les is 32-6 at LSU. The nay sayers can talk all they want about who's players he had but Les had to coach and motivate them and he did just that. He kept the LA borders shut to other schools and retained talent and recruited with the best of them. If that's failure, then where do I sign up?

Odds are that Les is the next UM coach. Rumors are that the deal is done and all Les has to do is sign the contract. We should know officially by next Tuesday, hopefully.

Les is a Michigan man. His blood runs blue. He understands the significance of the OSU rivalry by being a player and a coach while at Michigan.

Les also will brings his experience and his assistants who are well versed in recruiting the South, a BIG BIG BIG plus for Michigan.

Les' enthusiasm is what Michigan needs to kick the football program up a few notches.

This is a good thing, imho

Pelini as head coach? Won't happen....he's like a hermit, dodges the media, and doesn't kiss babies.

November 29, 2007  09:35 AM ET

Not so sure I want Miles as the next Michigan head coach, but it seems that if Michigan wants him, he will be the guy.

Pellini is going to stay at LSU, and Turner Gill will be the Cornhusker coach so all the dominoes will fall in place in one quick move.

Nice!!

November 29, 2007  09:35 AM ET

I sure thought Miles was somewhat on the hot seat with the LSU faithful prior to this year.....funny how things change when a coach is woo'd by another program. Do you LSU fans with all that Senior talent really think a two loss season is a success? I know you guys are playing for the SEC Championship (which in itself is a great accomplishment), but is that really gratifying? I don't think LSU would be losing that much. Miles has made some gutsy calls, however; he has made some pretty stupid calls as well. It's hard to justify making a call that can't win you the game, but can certainly lose you the game right there on the spot (some of the 4th down calls he's made).

November 29, 2007  09:43 AM ET

If Michigan representatives requested permission, they have only one idea in mind, and this is their man. I believe Carr had integrity as a person and his passion for the program can not be challenged, but as a head coach he was a tremendous under achiever. If it's Miles great, if it's Brian Kelly, great. We need a head coach that will teach this program how to play defense and a killer instinct. The remaining assistants are the root of the program. Regardless of who the next coach is, the slate needs to be wiped clean and let's start with fresh ideas.
