Recchi set to retire if Bruins win

08:22 AM ET 05.30 | There is a four-figure bottle of wine waiting for Mark Recchi. It's an expensive 1970 Petrus, a Bordeaux almost as old as its owner. Normally, you wouldn't make much of a 43-year-old wine connoisseur and his collection of valued vino that topped out at 1,000 bottles. But this one is chasing his third Stanley Cup and the oldest active player is making two promises. Boston Bruins winger Mark Recchi will finally uncork the Petrus should his 22nd season conclude with another championship ring and he will bid the game adieu as a player who trails only Gordie Howe, Mark Messier and Ron Francis in games played.

It would make a wonderful end to a long career if that old warrior won the Cup one last time. I wouldn't mind seeing Bergeron win one too. I'll still root for the Canucks though.

(They don't even have a picture of Recchi on file it seems...)

(Hurrah! They found one. Looks recent too.)

That would be a nice send off. He isn't nearly as fast as he used to be, but he still hustles out there. Gotta love the work ethic.

Ditto!

See you next year Mark.

I was already cheering for the Not-Canucks, but now I'll be cheering actively for the Bruins. Recchi is an all-time favourite and seeing him go out this way would be just awesome. Certainly better than watching a Canuck take a dive on his tour around the rink with the Cup out of instinct.

Does that mean he's going to stick around a few more years if the Bees don't win the cup? Mercy!!

Gordie Howe, Mark Messier and Ron Francis. Does he truly belong in that class.

May 30, 2011  12:20 PM ET

no-shiz....who wouldn't want to go out like that? The resident old-timer, winning a cup for beantown...would go out a hero. Can't write a better script.

Go Canucks.

better yet, is there a way that both teams can lose? Lock-out?

You wanna see him bounce off?

I want to see Chara take a run at anybody. Period. The Sedins will do ... for starters.

Not with Howe and Messier. Maybe Francis.

I wish he still played for the Flyers and will root for him.

The hairline gives it away ;)

Pretty much. Torres picks his spots, for sure he goes nowhere near Chara.

With you there.

I wouldn't mind a shot to Kesler too.
