Gardy floats moving Mauer from catcher

08:15 AM ET 06.01 | For now, Joe Mauer is a Twins catcher. But on Tuesday, manager Ron Gardenhire acknowledged that "if it doesn't work out when he comes back [from the disabled list], then we're going to have to figure somewhere else." Mauer, 28, hasn't played since April 12 and appears at least two weeks from returning from the DL. His leg strength is back, but a right shoulder injury has delayed his progress. Mauer is not scheduled to play in games the next two days because the Twins' extended spring training squad plays on the road at 10 a.m., and this doesn't allow time for Mauer to do the rest of his rehab work, Gardenhire said.

What a concept.

Not much of a surprise here, they need to get him back to being productive.

$184M for a DH who hits 10 HRs & is often injured. This could go down in history as the worst contract ever (besides the frequently mentioned 3 yrs/$51M contract for you know who)

Just a little something for you.

Too true. It pains me as a Twins fan to say this, but you are totally right. The Twins were in the absolute worst position last season with Mauer. They had to sign him or it would have been a PR nightmare, but it didn't take a genius to see how this would turn out.

The Twins are going to suffer for many years because of Mauer's contract, while the Indians take over the Central.

Highly unlikely.

Correction:

while the Indians take back the Central.

Bad article. How in the hell could they have missed Mike Hampton??!!! That is by far the #1 worst signing ever for the Braves. Corky Miller? Yeah, he was bad, but he didn't cost anything. Same with a lot of guys on that list, like Mondesi.... low salary flyers were taken that didn't work out. I thought this site had promise, but the guy is a useless dick weed. If you're going to rag on the Braves, I can get on that bandwagon, but the guy should at least have smart things to say.

The division is the Tigers' to lose. The Indians will wear themselves out after the All-Star break. With all of the talent the Tigers' have, if they can just find some consistency they will own the division for the next 4-7 years.

too many stupid head and shoulder commercials...Joe has to move to either 3rd or 1st. He's 6' 5" with bad legs, not a good thing for catchers.

Totally agreed. I hate to stereotype certain body types but Mauer doesn't need to spend the next decade in a crouch taking more hits. He seems injury-prone enough as it is.

the tigers could take the central division but it will be for a very little time because this team its very inconsistent at the plate as it is on the mound, i believe the indians will be the central division champions not matter what!!!

June 1, 2011  11:27 AM ET

perhaps mauer has to find another position and forget catching spot for good or if he inssist to be a catcher then he's career will be over sooner than he can expect!!!
