O's have Fielder atop their list

08:14 AM ET 06.02 | Marching through a teen-aged playoff drought, the Orioles have shown signs of improvement since Buck Showalter arrived. But this week's five-game losing streak on the West Coast is another reminder that they're not yet good enough. It's almost certain that this will be the 14th straight year without a playoff game at Camden Yards -- and probably the 14th straight year without a winning record, as well. What to do about it? Orioles people have been telling friends in the game that they'll have significant money to spend next winter, that manager Buck Showalter wants a first baseman who can hit in the middle of the order -- and that Prince Fielder may be the top target on their list.

"manager Buck Showalter wants a first baseman who can hit in the middle of the order"
Doesn't every team want a guy like that?

I can't imagine Showalter's disciplinary style and Fielder's carefree (geez....remember that bellyflop at home plate) personality meshing together.

check out my latest blog on www.themawnsterdome.com where I crunch some numbers, talk about Ghost Towns, Kevin Love, and about local fan knowledge vs. national media's knowledge (referencing a story on Yahoo! about Dice-K, while remembering Jeff Reardon, Derrick Lowe and Rod Beck):

Would make alot of sense. The last few first basemen they've had were disasters.... Atkins and now Lee. The question is will they try to low ball Fielder. They low balled Tex by at least $30 million and he was a hometown guy; they were out bid for V Mart this past offseason. Fielder would rake at that ball park and with a decent young nucleaus of players... Jones, Wieters and their young stable of arms, they could actually be above .500.

Fielder will command a princely sum.

I hope the O's get their big bat at third. It may kill the ability of the AL East to get the wildcard game, but then good competition makes the entire division more exciting.

They will have to over pay like many clubs trying to go from also rans to contenders... Nats and Werth come to mind. Who expected him to go there?

Listen, finishing three games out of the AL wildcard this year ain't bad. Heavy P would be the perfect addition after the season to get you over the hump in 2012. Good luck, O's.

3 games out of the WC? Winning the WC takes 88 games? is that 85 wins? Seems like a lot of wins for this team. They are definitely improved, but I think 75 wins for them is more likely...

Werth sucks and so do the Nats. Other than that it was a good signing.
