Goal.com has received word that Argentine midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron will sign with D.C. United when his contract with Estudiantes de la Plata ends in December. Veron would be the biggest signing by the club since Marco Etcheverry came aboard in 1996.

Goodbye Moreno, hello Veron.

Finally!!

Welcome to MLS.

i haven't seen him play since he was with the blues. does he still have anything left in the tank?

November 29, 2007  12:57 PM ET

No, but neither did Denilson, and look how good he did...Oh wait.

November 29, 2007  01:03 PM ET

What would it take to get Riquelme out of Boca?

November 29, 2007  01:12 PM ET

Probably a fat contract in a big market and guaranteed playing time. He would definitely be the best player in MLS if he decided to move here. Of course, home is where the heart is. It may be dang near impossible at this point.

November 29, 2007  01:47 PM ET

Happy to hear this. Great addition. He has to be better than Denilson, if only because there will be a lot of hype before his arrival, unlike with Denilson where there was very little.

November 29, 2007  01:51 PM ET

Veron has way more in the tank than Denilson had, hell Veron played in Copa America this summer on a stacked Argentina side, though I think the NYRB or maybe the Dynamo, should pony up and throw stacks of cash at Riquelme next season, he would dominate MLS, though he might get frustrated by the lack of talent around him...

November 29, 2007  02:53 PM ET

YESSSSS. riqueleme should play in europe for a couple of years becuase he never got to show what he can do with a big club. arsenal or juve would be a nice fit. VERON VERON. as long as u dont pull off another man u performance

November 29, 2007  02:55 PM ET

Maybe we won't choke against the Fire next year in the playoffs

November 29, 2007  04:15 PM ET

Still would like to see what a Viera, or a Makalele could do in MLS. I think big defensive minded central midfielders would do well in the league.

Especially Makalele.

The franchise is losing $10,000,000 a year. Can they afford this?

November 29, 2007  04:56 PM ET

That will be a huge signing! La Brujita can still bring it on! He's got some magic left!

And, what would it take to get Riquelme out of Boca? A couple more years, I'd say. (DC)

November 29, 2007  05:04 PM ET

um, Riquelme signed a permanent deal for Boca earlier this week

November 29, 2007  05:06 PM ET

Veron has plenty in the tank, he's been great for Estudiantes. That move to the premiership really hurt his career

November 29, 2007  05:32 PM ET

RichardUK, you can never trust a sport franchise's financial info. It can be distorted in many ways and purposely made to look worse than it is if it benefits the company. This is one of the weapons franchises use to get local governments to pony up money for stadiums and such. DC is looking for a new stadium, maybe the low revenue has something to do with that.

November 29, 2007  06:33 PM ET

denilson hasn't been good for a while.

November 29, 2007  09:58 PM ET

Riquelme will never leave Boca to play in the States. Nor should he. He played well in Spain. He could play anywhere he wants to. He plays at home because he wants to. When he is lining up a free kick from outside the area you don't think "Will he maybe score?", instead you think "What corner does he like?".

Chaco, that move to the EPL did not hurt his wallet. Pounds go far in Buenos Aires. It's a business after all.
