08:43 AM ET 06.04 | Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier said Friday the lockout, which began in March, has "created more discussion" among the staff about whether to sign or trade for a veteran. Minnesota is one of several NFL teams pegged to pursue a veteran. Seattle's Matt Hasselbeck, Washington's Donovan McNabb, Denver's Kyle Orton, Tennessee's Vince Young and Cincinnati's Carson Palmer, among others, might be available.

If they sign Orton, VY, or Palmer; what would have been the point of drafting Ponder?

Good point. I guess I didn't look at it from that angle. With Hasselback or McNabb, I see that as only a short term solution, two years tops. The other QBs could hang around for another five to eight years.

ST. LOUIS -- NFL players urged a federal appeals court Friday to declare the lockout illegal, saying the league had no right to impose a work stoppage that is now approaching three months with no sign of a deal that will save the 2011 season.
In a courtroom packed with some 200 people, including out-of-work players and retirees on folding chairs brought in to handle the crowd, attorneys on both sides of the bitter labor fight got roughly 30 minutes each to make their cases.
The appeal centers on the lockout that began hours after months of labor talks fell apart March 11, the players' union dissolved and the fight ended up in federal court.
The NFL contends the union decertification was a sham meant to gain leverage in the talks and the conflict remains subject to labor law.
The players argue that antitrust laws apply and the lockout put in place under labor law needs to be put on hold, as it was in April by U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson in Minnesota.
"We're asking for a preliminary injunction for a short period of time," the players' counsel, Theodore Olson, said in the hushed courtroom. "We're simply asking that the laws of the U.S. be respected."

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf said Thursday he could face radiation treatments if the part of a brain tumor that couldn't be removed by doctors winds up getting bigger.
Leaf told The Associated Press that the California doctor who performed the surgery couldn't get all of the tumor because parts were wrapped around brain stem nerves that affect swallowing and shoulder movement. Doctors said the tumor was benign.
"We're going to monitor it and if it starts to grow again then we're going to have to do a six-week round of radiation," Leaf said in a phone interview from California.
Before the tumor was discovered, Leaf says he was upset because he was "dead sober" but still felt like he was "hung over all the time." The 35-year-old Leaf was addicted to painkillers a few years ago.
He'd run a few miles or work out and feel better, the result he said he believes was from increased oxygen in his blood. A short time later, he'd "just hit a wall again."
He never thought his hydrocodone abuse caused the tumor and he said his doctors agreed.
Leaf, a Great Falls, Mont., native, starred at Washington State, and the San Diego Chargers made him the second pick of the 1998 NFL draft. He played for the Chargers from 1998-2000 and for the Dallas Cowboys in 2001. He threw for 3,666 yards and 14 touchdowns in his career, but is considered one of the league's biggest busts before later struggling with drugs.

Kellen Winslow believes the Tampa Bay Buccaneers can contend for the Super Bowl championship next season. To do so, however, they'll need to keep Aqib Talib, even after the cornerback's latest legal trouble.
"We need that guy to win," Winslow told NFL.com on Friday. "Talking about Super Bowls -- we need him really more than anyone besides (quarterback Josh) Freeman. He's that good. He locks down receivers. He's got to iron out what he's got to iron out, but we need him as much as anybody.
The tight end reiterated that point a few hours later on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access," saying Talib is "too talented to let go" and citing the cornerback's close relationship with Bucs coach Raheem Morris as a reason he might stay, despite speculation that the team is ready to cut ties after the lockout ends.
"Hopefully his situation gets worked out, and we can move on," Winslow said.
That situation is an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge that Talib faces in Garland, Texas. Police say Talib fired a gun at and pistol-whipped his sister's boyfriend during a March 21 domestic dispute, and a Dallas County grand jury handed down an indictment last week.
