10:16 AM ET 06.04 | Dan Rooney doesn't believe the NFL is singling out the Steelers in its attempt to make the game safer. That doesn't mean the Steelers' chairman emeritus entirely favors the league's latest initiative, which will hold teams accountable for on-field behavior of their players. "I think there's too many things involved to have that rule," Rooney said Friday at Heinz Field.

Sorry, Dan, this is an excellent idea. The players' union(erstwhile anyway) has no interest in holding their members accountable for anything. Someone has to do it. Hopefully this will keep more of the criminally stupid and gang-bangers out of the league.
Besides, the Steelers have a history of being less tolerant than the rest of the league in these matters, it shouldn't have a detrimental effect on them at all.

Agreed. Players unions (especially MLB's under Don Fehr) are some of the biggest enablers out there.

Will players and their union go on strike when owners refuse to hire criminally stupid and gang-bangers? After all they are one big brotherhood.

if rooney doesnt like the rule, he shouldnt have a coach that favors borderline dirty play, when you're coached to rock your opponent, the boundries legal and illegal become blurred.

The teams should be the first line to police their players and teach them to stick to the league's rule. They sign their checks and teh Golden rule he who has the Gold he who makes the rules.

the Steeler rule is actually to give the Steelers the benefit of the doubt officiating games and make calls against the other team

The Steelers are one of the dirtiest playing teams in the NFL. They wouldn't win half as many games as they do if they didn't intentionally play to physically damage and hurt the opponents. I guess their philosophy must be "If they can't play then we win" Just a bunch of street thugs and gangsters.

The direction they are headed in, it should come as no surprise that in a few years full contact will be outlawed. Careers are being shortened by violent hits and the NFL is still in full denial that concussions are leading to major brain damage amongst retired players. Cheap shots should definitely be banned and this will not sink in until you hit the thugs where it will hurt the most... suspensions ....fines don't mean squat to the modern player

Just because they hit hard does not mean they are dirty. All defensive players hit hard. It's a way to say "You don't want to do that again!" Aren't the Giants dirty for taking out 3 qb's in two weeks? Isn't Richard Seymour a dirty player for punching Big Ben? What about Ngata's karate chop to Ben's nose? Let's not forget that these players are well compensated for the risks they take. Defensive players get injured as much as offensive players do too. I became a Steelers fan because of the defense-"you are going to have to fight for every yard". If I wanted to watch games with no defense I would watch the Arena league. It's the pansy Brady's and Manning's that are ruining this league. Just because they are skilled, doesn't mean they are untouchable.
