Harper makes a few more enemies

08:12 AM ET 06.07 | This isn't the kind of thing that will endear baseball to Bryce Harper: blowing kisses to a pitcher off whom he hit a home run. Yes, he's young. But there's no excuse for that kind of thing. Even someone who cares as little about the unwritten rules as I do has to appreciate that Harper is being disrespectful here. That pitcher is trying to do his job. He didn't get $16 million to tide him over as he tries to get through the minors like Harper is. Maybe he gets away with that kind of thing in Class A. But if he doesn't learn a bit of humility at some point on his journey to greatness, he's going to get his ribs broken.

No ... someone just needs to bean his butt a couple of times with a 90+ MPH fastball.

OK, not very classy but if you watch the video it is barely perceptible. Besides, who knows that the pitcher may have done or said.

Harper is the poster child for this generation of spoiled rotten, one sport-focused kids who's parents sole goal is to obsess with one sport in hopes to get a college scholarship or make the pros. Can't blame this on his age.....by age 18 a kid knows how to properly act and to conduct himself. This kid clearly doesn't get it.

Didn't Ty Cobb do the same sort of stuff? What's the big deal?

what the hell is wrong with a few crazy personalities in baseball? OMG he blew a kiss??? i want him to apologize and then talk about "playin hard" and "just focusing on the next game" like EVERY other player in the league has been told to do.

all you whiney, self righteous jerks who post comments on here calling him classless are pathetic. you've NEVER been in that position, and god forbid someone not fit your cookie cutter mold of what you expect a baseball player to be. get a life and enjoy the sport and stop worrying about how OTHER ADULTS behave

Doesn't matter man! He should still stay humble.

Oh yeah, this guy won't be a problem...

June 7, 2011  09:57 AM ET

He plays in the NL. He's not going to get his "ribs broken".

Very good point.

I've read that, because of the hype surrounding him, every pitcher that Harper faces treats it as if it's the last at bat of the World Series and they're all gunning for him. Granted, blowing a kiss to a pitcher is almost Liberace on the gay scale, but he's young and dumb, and as this quote says, who knows what went on between these two.

Really? I was a senior in high school at 18, and in a lot of respects, I had no **** idea how to conduct myself.

True. It seems the media wants to paint this kid as a giant ****, but who knows at that age.

Well the press has had ample material to paint him as such...I tend to believe it.

I'm not saying that it shouldn't go on, or that he MUST shape up, but that kind of behavior is definately classless.

It seems you don't fully grasp the definition of classless, which is pathetic.

I do too, but given how highly touted this kid has been since such an early age, I really can't blame him for being a ****. We'll see how he is in a few years as he grows up.

If I were the Nats, I'd be looking for a current or former superstar who "plays/ed the game the right way" on their payroll as a mentor to this kid. Someone who he'd respect enough to listen to.

Erstad maybe?

I was thinking maybe Scott Cousins.
