The Schiano plan: Eliminate kickoffs

08:18 AM ET 06.07 | The thought that crossed Greg Schiano's mind -- "Why do we have to have kickoffs? -- has a lot to do with Eric LeGrand. Schiano said he hasn't gotten too many enthusiastic reactions to his plan for eliminating kickoffs from football -- more "hmms" than "yeahs!" he said. ... In case you missed it: Schiano wants to replace all kickoffs with a punting situation, including after the opening coin toss and to start the second half. So, as an example, when Team A scores a touchdown, it immediately gets the ball back on a fourth and 15 from its own 30-yard line. It can punt it back to Team B -- the most likely outcome and a safer play since the bigger collisions usually happen on kickoffs. Or it can line up and go for the first down, essentially replacing an onside kick with an offensive play that would require more skill than luck.

"Why do we have to have kickoffs?"

Good question...guess you can start a game in multiple ways.

How about we continue to put it on a tee but instead of kicking it we whack it with a club like golf? Could call it whacking off instead of teeing off!

QUOTE(#3):

The club would have to be much larger, like a bat, and do you really want to hand one side a bat to use, then you would have to give the other side one, then ........................

Then it's called hockey

Can't believe none of you commented on the whacking off!

Every once in awhile you'll have a player, coach, executive type or a talking head, come up with some crack-pot idea so utterly ridiculous, that it warrants serious consideration ... this is not one of them. His idea is pure rubbish worthy of a teabag fer sure ;)

We should just throw flags on the players, remove the pads and call it a day

Just remove the pads + helmets and call it a day.

Or, and I'm just throwing around ideas here, he could teach his players proper tackling technique, so they don't put themselves in harm's way. It's a violent sport, and these kids need to be taught to protect themselves.

We just considered the source. :-) I started to early, but thought I would wait, everyone avoided it like it would infect them, that is funny, especially with this bunch on here.

Yeah, this is normally a bunch of vultures!
