Joba done ... for good?

08:25 AM ET 06.10 | The sky was the limit only a few short years ago for Joba Chamberlain, and it will be again soon according to his father. Harlan got the phone call in a Yankee Stadium parking garage a little after 2 p.m. Thursday, the call from Joba telling him that he had a torn ligament in his right elbow, that he would almost certainly need Tommy John surgery and that his once-promising season was done. Three hours later, Harlan was confident enough in modern medicine and Dr. James Andrews' winning percentage to declare that his son's "best years in baseball are yet to come." He was only doing a father's job. But after yet another setback, another interruption in a career already full of them, one doesn't have to be a hopeful Red Sox fan to suspect the best of Joba Chamberlain is now behind him.

This guy's short career has fluctuated oddly.

This may explain why.

He certainly could come back but not every player that has had this surgery has had a great career. Time will tell.

Guys like Josh Johnson, Chris Carpenter and, of course, Tommy John prove that players can come back from major surgery.

However, guys such as Brandon Webb demonstrate that not everyone makes it back.

The jury is still out - way out - on Joba.

No more fist pumps for a while...............

... especially in your mid 20's when you're accustomed to being a power pitcher.

Similar to Strasburg... early in their careers to make that kind of adjustment.

At least, not on the mound.

Indeed.

Perhaps that's how he tore the ligament...

It will be interesting to see what kind of pitcher Strasburg is when he returns.

Webb had shoulder surgery...
This is not too big of a deal. He will go through a season where he had inconsistent control on his way back, they all do. Her had work to do. It will be some time before he can put a consistent season together.

This will lower Youkilis' HBP count for 2011 by 2 or 3.

June 10, 2011  09:23 AM ET

How well he comes back will depend on his work habits. Oh ... uh oh ...

i never heard he had poor work habits, weight jokes aside.

Some fans of any team in any sport are awful. I do not personally know a Red Sox fan who hopes Joba Chamberlain has a career ending injury. So called "journalists" should not be saying things like this.

Also, what's up with calling everyone's father?

It is a feel good back story, his mother is an adict and his father is in a rascal and raised Joba by himself...

June 10, 2011  09:45 AM ET

How many pitchers have had TJ over the years? Now because it's Joba he's finished? ****!

June 10, 2011  09:52 AM ET

The "Joba Rules" should have limited him to pitching only every third or fourth day, or maybe once a week

if he's over weight, and he is, how much effort can he be putting into his conditioning? This past winter he was asked by the Yanks to get in better shape. He came into camp fatter than last year.

Yeah he did. All he did that I know of was get some weight lifting machines. I would think that any guy that makes it to that level would compete in all phases of the game....including conditioning and preparation. Maybe he's done more than I know of in all fairness to him but I don't see it too much.
