Watered-down parity at U.S. Open?

10:17 AM ET 06.12 | This week, as golf prepares for its first Tiger-less U.S. Open since 1994, no one player is filling the vacuum left by his sudden fall. The World Rankings are in constant flux and the majors are anyone's tournament, with 10 different players, including Woods at Torrey Pines in 2008, having won the last 10, the last four going to first-time winners. Parity? Perhaps . . . that and Phil Mickelson's inability to rise to the top after so many years as the undisputed second-best player behind Woods. But it's a watered-down parity for sure.

"Watered-down"? That term is not apropos.

Parity, yes.

It's a major. I watch all majors.....I don't ever watch because Tiger is in or out.

It's pretty obvious by now that it's the media alone that's holding on to the Woods mystique. For them, nothing else matters. The American public has moved on. Sports writers, chief among them the Bamberger and Morfit type, don't have anything else they can shift their little brains to covering. It's bad enough that Morfit has a face that doesn't require a Halloween costume-- his writing is the ultimate in non-imagination. If they tried writing about other people and other issues they might find people interested. Pretty sad.

I hear Charley Reimer is ready to commit hara-kiri without Tiger's behind to kiss.

You can comment all you want about the press and your hatered for TW...but the numbers don't lie...US Open tickets are being given away this year, televison rating over the past few tournments down...Whether you root for the guy or not...he moves the needle and Golf needs him back on the course.

The Nelson and Colonial barely moved the needle down here for us, the local gentry.

They've probably turned the beeves back out on that goddamned ranch in Los Colinas.

Just so long as it is only the parity that's watered down. I hate it when your drink is watered down.

There's that need word again. Golf was fine before Showboat and, it'll be fine after him--trust me on that one. I know you're having trouble with this, as are the media hacks, but golf doesn't revolve around one person. It never did.

Take a few deep breaths and try to enjoy the game as it is. It's still interesting, exciting and worth watching. And, try to keep this in mind, it isn't the true fans of golf that suffer from not having Daly or TW in the line-up. It's the media, a few tourney directors and a handfull of non-golf fans who suffer. That's it pal, end of the story.

The guy had drawing power, you can't deny that. I don't particularly like the guy. I still know and accept what he did to the game's popularity.

When his life and his game hit the skids, no-one (the Tour brass, the media and networks, the tournaments, the sponsors, etc) made any adjustments. The purses keep getting bigger and the media keeps force feeding things Tiger and failing that, things Phil and failing that they have nothing. I wouldn't call that a very smart business model in light of falling ratings and attendance.

The game will survive Tiger's absence. At the US Open, next week, throughout the year and as long as he has medical issues. Not sure the people who make lots of money from the game will do so well unless they make some serious changes, beginning with this folly that the purses can only get bigger every year. Time to scale back guys. Nothing wrong with earning $750K for winning a tournament in Texas instead of $1.1M, considering you still make a living playing a game.

Accursed typo! The guy still has drawing power.

So does a hooker, John Daly and Glenn Beck. But, that doesn't mean they are beneficial, positive, healthy or correct.

Showboat had his day.

It's time to move on. And most Americans are glad of it.

June 15, 2011  08:36 AM ET

Probably the saddest part about this is that Michael Bamberger can't seem to get his nose out of Showboat's bum.

Seriously Mike, move on already.

You should be shown the door for being the most uninspired writer in the history of golf.

SI could definitely do without you.

June 15, 2011  11:40 AM ET

Great course, great weather, no Tiger...what could be better....well...cheaper prices for tix could help.
