Significant shakeup coming to Flyers

08:21 AM ET 06.14 | The Flyers, if they are to sign Ilya Bryzgalov, will have to clear cap space, with some speculating that moving Jeff Carter would do the trick. But the Flyers don't appear willing to move Carter's $5.27 million cap hit to clear space for Bryzgalov. Rather, they are leaning toward making a series of moves totaling at least $5 million, if they can. Columbus is also seeking a power-play defenseman. Matt Carle ($3.43 million cap hit) would fit that bill, but Howson wants more than him for the eighth pick, we're told. Would he take Scott Hartnell ($4.2 million) or Kris Versteeg ($3.083 million)? Not likely. Howson wants a proven, impact scorer for that pick, preferably a centerman. One thing is certain. The lay of the land is about to change for the Flyers.

It has to, really. Howson sounds like a guy who wants Briere for his 8th pick. Just a guess. I don't see happen.

Isn't the Bryz a free-agent? So isn't this talk of trading just nonsense? Figure that the new cap gives them an extra 4 million to play with...how much does anybody really expect the Bryz to command? He's a goalie, who's never won a playoff round.

Move a few role guys and make the Bryz an offer to be the started on a legitimate contender, that should be enough. Look at what's realistically going to be on the market via trade: Bernier (LA), Schneider (Van; cannot see this guy want to spend at least another full season behind leaky Lou, and there's no chance that Vancouver can dump Luongo with that salary), at least one goalie from Washington.

All three possibilities listed involve moving one decent player & a draft pick for a solid prospect that is extremely cap friendly. I'm not too sure that that Philly really needs the Bryz, but I DO know that the Bryz needs Philly. He's made it clear that he's tired of playing for a mediocre team...well...with that means a possible salary reduction over what you could get to play in a hockey wasteland.

No, Howson wants Carter. If Philly is not going to humor that, then I suspect Howson will shop #8 pick and players someplace else. Doesn't mean Howson and Holmgren won't deal for "something", but if Carter is not in play, then I suspect the pick leaves the table too.

Ok, thanks for the info BBBJ.

This is all music to my ears. I love the thought of the Filthy Flyers dumping talent all around the league. (Especially out of the Eastern Conference.) Not only that, but I think Bryz will turn out to be another Ray Emery.

I think the Bryz is a pretty good goalie...but there's a big difference between playing for a stinker (decent of late) in the middle of the dessert and a legitimate contender in a hockey hotbed.

I haven't watched him enough to comment on his consistency, which as we are seeing in finals, is the most important part of being a goaltender on a very good hockey team. You don't need to steal a bunch of games, but you do need to keep your team in it every night.

I think it would be hard for him to go from the Phoenix situation to Philadelphia. A couple bad games and the fans and media would be all over him, especially because of all they had to give up for him.

Don't they go through this "blow-up" like every other year?

June 14, 2011  09:58 AM ET

Kinda changes the meaning of...."LET'S GO FLYERS!"

Actually, they don't. You are thinking of the later Bobby Clarke GM years when he would get impatient and trade, trade, trade. Holmgren has not been the type to blow up the team. He has added pieces here and there but there has been more consistency with him as GM.

And this article is a little bit of hyperbole. Sure the Flyers will need to dump a salary or two to get a #1 goalie, but it's not like they are blowing up the team.

You sir are the voice of reason.

that's what I'm thinking too, but I admittedly don't know enough about him to really comment on his consistency. I know he's put up really solid numbers over the past few seasons, but he's recorded alot of shutouts, shutouts drag down the average by a considerable margin...I'd wanna see how many stinkers, how many yanks he got before really putting a price on him.

The voice of reason. I think you're right. A goalie, replace Pronger and maybe a bit of emphasis on tweaking defense philosophy and I think they'll be fine. No need to blow up the team as you put it. They were one of the best teams in the east most of the year. I don't think hysteria is the answer. By the way, I'm not trying to sound like I know everything. Our guys have their own problems and I'm at a loss to give them advice. Lack of heart maybe? Luongo-itis?

Lately, I've really come to respect Keith Jones's opinion on hockey matters. Maybe I'm a little homer blinded cos I liked him as a Flyer so much, but he really seems level headed and knowledgeable - sort of like the anti-Roenick. Jones thinks getting Bryz is a good deal for the Flyers and I'm basing a lot of my opinion on what he says. Maybe I'll be disappointed, who knows.

The only thing the Flyers need...and I don't even think right away, is a proven consistant solid goalie...they will likely contend through the regular season while at the same time evaluate Bob...Messing up the entire line-up and chemisty for an un-proven playoff goalie with an attitude is premature.

Replace The Pronger??? The Pronger can not be replaced and he will return better than he was before, faster, stronger.....(let's see how many old timers get that reference).

Well, I defer to you on all the matters related to the Flyers. You know them better than I do.

who else, as a proven nhl goalie is there? there's not ALOT of consistency between the pipes since the lockout and the few blue-chippers are locked up
