Officials letting Bruins play rough

08:19 AM ET 06.14 | The Canucks have hit a dry spell at the worst possible time. Why has the Vancouver offense gone dry? Lots of reasons, but Mason Raymond being carted off to hospital after the opening faceoff on Monday's late hit by Johnny Boychuk with no puck near, and no call, is a pretty good place to start. Raymond, in a vulnerable position, had his spine driven into the boards. "We all thought it was a penalty but the referee says he [Raymond] lost his edge," said Henrik Sedin. Stated simply, the Bruins can virtually do anything to any Vancouver player with total impunity until after the game is won. At that point, they get their fair share of penalties. They can do anything to any Vancouver player after the whistle while it's still a game and nothing is called unless there is a flagrant retaliation by the Vancouver player.

As it should be.

It goes both ways. Both teams are chippy after the whistle. It is called hockey, not basketball.

Amen to that!

This will feed into the conspiracy theorists who believe that the NHL doesn't want specific teams to win the Stanley Cup especially Canadian teams.

i hope they put away the whistles like the clincher against the lightning

Really? No puck near, blatant late hit!? The puck rolled through his legs, Boychuk kept him from playing the puck and rode him out to the boards as one normally would. It was unfortunate and odd how it happened, but not as devious as the Province makes it out. Get a grip.

I watched the "hit" that Boychuk put on Raymond and I don't think it was a penalty. Boychuk didn't really hit him at all it was more Boychuk backing into the boards like that.

The Nucks may be victims of there own diving. The reffs might be thinking that the Nucks are just embellishing. That having been said I think there is a lot of incidental contact going on for both side but hey, its a rough sport.

Should they lose the series, the Canucks will have only themselves to blame. They're supposed to be the faster & more skilled team; if the other team is committing themselves to the body on all plays then the better team should be able to pass & skate their way around. Unfortunately for the Canucks, its not the case; they're not willing to pay the price by taking the hit to make a pass (how many blue line turnovers were there last night with a Canuck winger already at the red line?) and they're skating like their feet are in cement.

Boston is doing what THEY need to do in order to win this series. Their mentality is that the refs can't possibly call everything. It doesn't help that the Canucks can't get their mojo going on PP, cose if their PP was on, the Bruins would play alot more careful.

Props to the Bruins for doing what they need to do.

Wow, had to read this whole article and it was one of the more pathetic pieces I've seen in a while.

A better subject for this quisling writer would be the disappearing act by the always eloquent Roberta Luongo. That was some special karma being doled out last night.

That'll teach him to keep his yap shut next time.

Irf you're suggesting that Boston is playing a chippier game than Vancouver, I'm gonna disagree. The Nucks have been hacking and whacking their way to this point as well and no one should be complaining about the officiating.

BTW, all that talk (on SI, ESPN, Versus etc) about the speed of Vancouver dominating Boston is garbage. The Bruins are plenty fast.

Irf is latin for *if*.

The B's play the game the way it's supposed to be played, unlike the swan diving Canuckleheads.

June 14, 2011  09:40 AM ET

He did ride him pretty far, but I still think that would have been a highly suspect call to make.

June 14, 2011  09:42 AM ET

canuck, all that video shows it that Boychuck could have planted him pretty hard if he wanted. It looks like Raymond gets tangled with him and loses his balance more than anything.

They def are. I didn't see how Sedin could have been called for embellishing last night, but they sure enough called him for it. The refs are sick of seeing the swan dives. So much so that they just let Marchand punch him in the face six straight times with impunity.

Not much going on there. Awkward way to hit the wall for sure, but I don't see a penalty.
