Former MLB commish: Cuban 'a real problem' in NBA

07:58 AM ET 06.16 | Dallas owner Mark Cuban had much of his approach to team ownership vindicated with the Mavs' first title, though many remain unimpressed. Former MLB commissioner Fay Vincent sees too many similarities between Cuban and the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner to think Cuban would be a good match for MLB. Vincent said, "I think it's more important for owners to be gentlemen, play by the rules, respect the authorities, do what's good for the sport, than it is to manage his franchise to total success. The subtleties make the difference. George Steinbrenner was a real problem in baseball, and I think Mark Cuban is a real problem in basketball."

Cuban is one of the best owners in all of sports!!

Once again Old people don't want young (if you consider 52 to be young) to come in and show how it's done.

I guess he rather have owners more like the ones for the Kings, Clippers, and the N.Y. Mets etc. See the pattern? Clueless and not willing to get involved enough for a winning team....!!

QUOTE(#5):

Basically, he compared him to steinbrenner and his beef is that those two care more about WINNING than what's 'good' for the league.......What a crock

I laughed when I read that too. Oh no, Cuban is like one of the iconic managers in MLB history! Heavens no!!!

errr iconic owners

I mean ppl do think Cuban is a **** but what has he actually done to hurt the game of basketball or the NBA?

I mean he took a perennial loser and turned them into winners and wasnt afraid to spend money in the process....

He complained about the poor officiating (which we all do here from time to time) and for good reason....I personally think it has gotten better the last year or three....

A lot of ppl dont realize that he lets Donnie Nelson do his GM duties and they have a team president that is completely behind the scenes doing busy....When Cuban took over the Mavs be left the building up to Big Donnie and Little Donnie but they would ask for his input...He took over the marketing side of the operations and the digital and technological aspects of the business...

and what does a baseball former commish know about the NBA exactly?

June 16, 2011  09:17 AM ET

I think Cuban is great...and I am a Heat fan.

To me, Cuban and Mikey Arison of the Heat are pair of solid owners.

Cuban is the "fans" owner while Arison is your classy, do it behind the scenes owner.

Both have had great success and will do so even more in the future.

Probably more than David Stern.

June 16, 2011  09:31 AM ET

I don't like Cuban as a loud mouth A hole, but as an owner, he is great, he spends $, is good to his players, and wants to win more than anything... He may say stupid things, be cocky but if he is putting a good team on the court than what is he doing wrong for the NBA?

QUOTE(#13):

Stern is a hack. The ref that served time in jail for gambling probably spoke the truth about Stern working hard to get certain teams into the Finals. It's all about the money.

What exactly did Vincent do for his sport? Not necessarily defending Cuban but as an owner it's HIS league (in part), not the commissioner's.

June 16, 2011  09:42 AM ET

Who cares what Vincent says - he is as biased as they come.

June 16, 2011  09:47 AM ET

Money well spent, Bro.

June 16, 2011  10:04 AM ET

Cuban is a not problem, he really cares about the Mavs and his players. The guy freaking spoils them and makes sure they have the best. He attends every game home or road and sits by the bench and cheers like a fan. What more do you want from an owner?

"I think it's more important for owners to be gentlemen, play by the rules, respect the authorities, do what's good for the sport, than it is to manage his franchise to total success...

that stuff counts and is important; but the last point, managing your franchise to success is most important and what brings in fans and $'s...isnt that what this business is really about?
