Behind Gibbs' timeout gaffe

In the final, frantic moments of another close game after the most difficult week the Redskins could remember, Coach Joe Gibbs sought help before making a key decision yesterday against the Bills. Unsure about the rules regarding the use of timeouts in an attempt to "freeze" a place kicker, Gibbs said he consulted an official along the sideline, asking whether he could call another timeout after the one he had used a moment earlier, before Buffalo's Rian Lindell sent the ball through the uprights from 51 yards away. Regardless of what the official told Gibbs, his decision to call consecutive timeouts in that situation led to a 15-yard penalty. "To be quite truthful, I made a decision there at the end that very likely cost us the game," Gibbs said. "That's on me."

Wow, he had to ask an official if he could call consecutive time outs? How long has Gibbs been coaching?

give the skins a pass this week and next. dealing with Taylor's death, followed by a Thursday game, would make it hard for any team to win.

December 3, 2007  07:25 AM ET

pw I don't buy that Taylor's death is the cause for an idiotic move like this

Guess this is a littile harder than NASCAR.

I couldn't believe it when Gibbs made that call. I'm not a real serious football addict, and even I knew you can't do that. Rough week for the Skins, though.

i didnt no u couldnt do it.

Let's not forget that Lindell nailed that kick from 51yrds with plenty of room. The timeout isn't the reason the Skins' lost.

December 3, 2007  08:56 AM ET

It had to be hard for Gibbs and the team to play yesterday. Some things are more important than sports. A life lost is one thing!

December 3, 2007  09:00 AM ET

I don't buy it. Sounds like the "I asked an official" story was made up to save face. He is a head coach in the NFL and didn't know this very basic of NFL rules.

December 3, 2007  09:18 AM ET

Can we safely conclude that Joe's better days are behind him? TRUTH says you can't go home again brothers and sisters!

December 3, 2007  09:19 AM ET

I don't think Gibbs' mistakes had much to do with Sean Taylor, Jr. 88.

I think maybe it's just Gibbs time to move on.

December 3, 2007  09:35 AM ET

While I feel for the 'skins and Gibbs, that call should not have happened.
Even I knew you cannot call consecutive time-outs.

That being said, it was a pretty trying time and I think to be fair, Gibbs has earned a pass on this one.

No big deal, credit the Bills and move on.

December 3, 2007  09:36 AM ET

Even if he asked the official, the official would have given him the correct answer. You CAN call a second timeout (but you will get a 15 yard penalty).

December 3, 2007  09:38 AM ET

That's rediculous! So, I can ask a police officer what would happen to me when I shoot someone?

December 3, 2007  09:53 AM ET

Difficult week Joe. The most important thing is to go down to Miami and celebrate the life the Sean Taylor. Nothing else really matters.

December 3, 2007  09:58 AM ET

this isn't the reason we lost this game

December 3, 2007  10:11 AM ET

Joe, I'll mail you a copy of the NFL rulebook, ok?

December 3, 2007  10:14 AM ET

Bomber's right, this may have contributed to the loss but by no means was the sole reason...Give Gibbs a break...
