Gibbs unaware of 10-man tribute

Gregg Williams excited his players Saturday night by deciding to leave Sean Taylor's free safety spot vacant and let his defense start its first series with just 10 men on the field. Trouble is, the Redskins assistant head coach-defense didn't get his signals straight with coach Joe Gibbs, who said after the game he didn't know of the plan. Before the kickoff, however, a television reporter revealed it on Fox's pregame show. Gibbs declined to discuss the confusion at length in his postgame press conference, saying he preferred to confer with Williams first. But the Pro Football Hall of Fame coach was obviously unhappy he had been made to look bad when asked about the strategy.

So , something else Joe was unaware of. I thought it was classy for the Bills not to throw deep against them on the play.

I agree, the resulting play was a 22 yard gain. But maybe Buffalo didn't know?????

December 3, 2007  09:02 AM ET

i know he was a great player but would he really have wanted the opposition to take in easy on his defense? seeing how aggressive a player he was i think not.

December 3, 2007  09:18 AM ET

Wow, things are looking worse and worse for Gibbs. First he didn't understand the timeout rule and now he had no idea what was going on in the first play of the game?

I hate to talk trash about a legend... but... if he's clueless, why's he leading an NFL team?

December 3, 2007  09:23 AM ET

Nice gesture, but not sure I like this. Putting your team at a disadvantage is probably not something taylor would want. Plus it put the oneous on Buffalo not to take advantage. Not a good move for either side.

December 3, 2007  09:28 AM ET

Who called the second consecutive time out that cost them 15 yards and made the winning field goal easier to make?????
That is the real question I think. If it ws a player on the field, then players goof up, If it was Gibbs, then that is the real question about the coaching staff.....

December 3, 2007  09:29 AM ET

You know folks, Joe Gibbs was at the top when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Certainly not taking ANYTHING away from him in those years, but since his return to coaching in the NFL, his teams have not been all that impressive. Perhaps GIbbs needs to retire again and play with his NASCAR team and maybe they can figure out a way to make those Toyotos run better.

December 3, 2007  09:31 AM ET

Got it!!!just read the next article. Bad decision by the coach, but i give him credit for taking the blame. Hate to say it, he is a class act , but maybe it is time. He has made some questionable decisions that did not help his team at the end of games this year.

December 3, 2007  09:33 AM ET

I'm sure Buffalo, as bad as it is offensively, had the brains to recognize the man-advantage on the field. They can claim otherwise because their offense is run like a highschool team.

But yea, a simple run play would have been sufficient. No need for a kneel down.

December 3, 2007  09:51 AM ET

I was expecting the Bills to take a knee or do something to acknowledge the 'Skins gesture and not run the ball for a first down and more.

Imagine if the Bills actually scored a touchdown on that first play.

December 3, 2007  09:56 AM ET

the redskins have a lot more problems then a blown timeout call and a missing man formation on the first snap.
the players just don't seem to play with ANY sense of urgency.

December 3, 2007  10:15 AM ET

Maybe someone should've told the Bills and then the Bills would've gone easy on them and just run a short draw play....but no one did and they bust the play for 22.

They'd be better off with anyone as head coach. They have looked terrible this season. The first play had othing to do with Gibbs costing them 15 yards at the end of the game to make the field goal much easier. I can just see him on the sidlines...

Gibbs "Excuse me sonny(the ref). Can I call another timeout??? Ref "Well, you can, but"
Gibbs "Timeout"
Ref "Well, if you had let me finish I was going to say, but it is a penalty."
Gibbs "Dagnabbit."

December 3, 2007  10:56 AM ET

Joe is doing a fine job of making himself look like a fool. He needs no ones help.

December 3, 2007  10:58 AM ET

Haha well I think Gibbs is a doddering old stooge, with all due respect. Hes a hall of famer playing out of his league right now. Williams set himself up perhaps for big things.

Gibbs probably thought his NASCAR team needed a pit. I mean, they can go into the pit technically whenever they please. Its kind of like a time-out. If he had his way he'd probably just call time-outs all day to put new wheels on Jason Campbell.

In other news, I think that gesture on defense was amazing, and kudos to the Redskins and their players (whoever ordered it, ahem, not Gibbs) for going through with it, 22 yard gain or not. As stated above, I think the Bills operate like a second-rate highschool team and thought they were doing very well when they trampled for a big run against 10 guys.

That said...why didnt Gibbs pretend he knew about it after the game, instead of looking like a toolbag in his conference?
