08:13 AM ET 06.24 | Fan patience is again being tested on the North Side. Cubs fans don't like what they've seen, and apathy is rampant. Despite all the clubhouse rhetoric about a new-and-improved, grind-it-out attitude after a clubhouse meeting, the Cubs are about to start taking bids on overpriced and/or underachieving players. ... When he returns to Chicago next week, Jim Hendry and his staff will meet to assess the team's strategy in the weeks before the trading deadline. It's business as usual, and happens every year before the July 31 trade deadline. But the upcoming moves will determine whether manager Mike Quade will play more kids in the second half or continue to try to win with veterans.

Over the years the Cubs have tried just about everything and have come up short. Maybe one issue that they need to correct is to give up the idea that they need to play so many day games.

Old, slow, overpaid and on the downside of your career? Call Brian Sabean, GM, San Francisco Giants, 3rd and King, San Francisco, CA. Let's make a deal!

I really don't see the Cubbies getting much in return for any of these players. Perhaps they could get something of value for Pena or Zambrano.

QUOTE(#5):

Pena is on pace to possibly hit 30 HR. A lot of teams will take that despite his ~.220 average and Ks.

Isn't Jack Cust available somewhere. Maybe the Cubs should pick him up

They havent won the world series in over 100 years. Why not try something drastic?

But, what do the Cubs have that other clubs will want?

Well, they do have players that other clubs would want (Castro, Marmol, etc). They're just players that the Cubs are not going to trade away.

They should take a page out of George Costanza's book. Do the exact opposite of what they'd normally do. It worked for George...

Take a page from the M's - who are already begining to reap the benefits of their rebuilding.
I'm not saying that playing .500 ball is great, but when you consider the M's lost 100 and only won 60 games last year, .500 baseball doesn't look too bad right about now. The fans are returning to Safeco again

Pitching, defense and speed. 80s style ball is coming back in vogue

That would be great for the game if it continues.

Yeah. Maybe the Cardinals can re-pave over their field and relive the glory years

Whitey-Ball was awesome. Every time Vince Coleman got on base, there would be a buzz through the entire stadium, just waiting on him to take off for second......
