08:10 AM ET 06.24 | The details coming to light are nothing short of awkward, even operatic, in the case of Jim Riggleman's resignation. General manager Mike Rizzo is expected to name a new skipper for the rest of the season no later than Monday. It's only speculation, but one has to assume that third base coach Bob Porter and bench coach John McLaren are candidates. The Nationals could also turn to Randy Knorr, who has moved up the ladder in the Nationals' minor league system. He managed Class A Potomac and guided them to the 2008 Carolina League Mills Cup. ... Rizzo could turn to Bobby Valentine, who was a finalist before Riggleman was named permanent manager.

I lost a lot of respect for Riggleman.

Why, because for once the manager fired the team. All he wanted was for the team to pick up his option next year.

You can't blame Riggleman for wanting some job security. However, the way he went about it may prevent him from landing a MLB managing job in the future.

Your probably right, but it is nice for once to see a manager tell the team to FO, rather than the other way around. Not sure what the Nats are thinking. He sure seemed like the right guy for that crappy job and they couldn't even commit to him for one more guaranteed year? They deserve to continue to suck.

I agree that it is refreshing to a degree. He also has not done that bad of a job with what he has. As of this morning, they are above .500.

Why didn't he and his agent discuss his contract in the offseason? His time is bad all around, but coming off a wining streak and getting over .500 and suddenly it's all about his contract? Come on. Bad choices all around.

Riggleman asked to discuss his contract several times since last fall and the GM wouldn't even discuss it with him. You can't manage a team if the players thing you won't be back next year. He could have just phoned it in a picked up a paycheck for the rest of the year. He had the integrity to not do that.

Thing is, the next manager will likely benefit. Strasburg will be back, the team is starting to play better, Bryce Harper is on the way...things are looking up in D.C.

Valentine seems to be a possibility for EVERY team that is looking for a manager these days. Funny how it just never pans out.

Yes, true. In my opinion, the best thing he could've done was manage until the end of the year and hope his team finished with an above .500 record, which would impress other organizations seeking managers, since DC was not interested in his services any longer. For all Riggleman knows, DC may have offered him a couple year deal depending on his performance this year, which up to last night has been relatively positive considering no Strasburg and many games without their All Star 3B. At the same time, his being utterly frustrated is something anyone can relate to.

Bobby Valentine picture's himself as a think tank intellectual focusing on the simple game of baseball. Unfortunately he treats the overseers (ownership) the same way. Because he will be successful manager the fans and media will grow like him and tolerate the superiority attitude. His overseers will not. Even though his team is winning, the overseers will attempt to reign him in by leaking nasty stories about him to the media. This will bring undo scrutiny of his work. This will grow his superiority attitude and provide positive feedback for the overseers. Eventually Bobby's head will roll and he will end up back on TV. Then it will begin again...
