08:24 AM ET 06.24 | Ryan Smyth may want out of L.A., but the Oilers are not the only possibility for him in Alberta. When Smyth was a free agent and taking bids for his services in the summer of 2007, the Calgary Flames were an ardent pursuant. Flames captain Jarome Iginla even personally talked to Smyth to sell him on moving to Southern Alberta. Then-GM Darryl Sutter also called Smyth directly, on top of dealing with his agent, Don Meehan. ... Could the long-time Edmonton Oilers forward be making his way to the Stampede City now? Smyth has reportedly asked to be traded from the Kings with one year remaining on his contract and wants to land back in Edmonton, but a source confirmed yesterday the Flames are also in the mix for the 35-year-old left winger.

Too incongruent for me to wrap my head around.

It's like Rob Schneider playing Hamlet.

June 24, 2011  09:25 AM ET

how could he possibly want out now that they have the human sandpaper that IS mike richards?

They just their player that I keep saying they are one player away from acquiring to become competitors.

What do I do this year when LA & the Preds meet up in the semis? What a dilemma!

June 24, 2011  09:29 AM ET

Just trade him to Edmonton.

Did a great job didn't he?

Well, you handle this stuff today. I'm off to the airport to be groped at security. Highlight of my week. :-)

I try to hold down the fort Slappy. I'll throw in a couple of stupid comment for you.

Put a banana in your pocket.

Why would he want to leave, especially after what LA did yesterday. He can play with two really good centers, or go to Edmonton and help with the rebuild? Or Calgary and their rebuild?

June 24, 2011  11:16 AM ET

I've heard rumours that its some sort of family issue that has Smyth wanting to go back home. Leads me to believe he may have an ailing parent or something along those lines, and wants to be back with them.

He would be such an asset to the Oilers - having a player on the team who believes in the Oiler prestige and aura can only help the franchise. Let alone his leadership. And his work in front of the net could be a major PP asset with shooters like Hall and Eberle.

The other question from this article: if the Flames can't afford to re-sign Tanguay (they shouldn't for what he wants), how can they afford Smyth's contract? I'm pretty sure his Cap Hit is higher than what even Tanguay thinks he's worth.

I liked him as an Oiler.

But I think his best days are long past.

Edmonton needs something aside from a slow aging net presence.

They need SOME sort of proper veteran leadership though.

I wouldn't be depending on having Hemsky teach my bluechip prospects how to be successful NHLers.

And if they trade for him this year i bet he signs for the next two on the cheap.

Not arguing but an aging plow horse doesn't seem like the one to me.

I think the Kings went out and aquired Richards on the premise that Smyth's $6mill+ salary is being moved. Remember the Kings still need to lock up Drew Daughty- that has to be at least $6 mill per.

The Flames are a cap team every year and they still need to resign Tanguay. You can't tell me they trade Regher to make room for Ryan Smyth? That doesn't make sense- they need to get younger and faster.

The Oil is still the perfect fit. Smyth wants to go there and the young players need his leadership. The Oilers can also easily absorb the cap hit this year without blinking an eye.

I wonder if he'd be willing to play on a 3rd line with Raffi Torres in Vancouver? Probably not, but it gets him back north of the border and gives him his best shot at a Cup. Just a thought....

Not sure who else they could get that can provide the leadership that Smyth can.

Agreed.

And again, that Oiler Pride. I don't think it can be overstated how much of a sense of pride to be an Oiler he can instill in these kids. The tradition and reverence. "The pride in the jersey." As Tom Renney had put it this season.

But the Oil are Hank's true team, if I remember right - he has affairs with others - so if, as an Oiler fan, he's opposed I must defer. But question if he has a better idea?

I'd prefer to pursue somebody with more left in the tank.

I honestly don't know who is out there. And I have nothing personally against Smyth.

But I'd want more than him.

why pay 6 million dollars for a player when your goal is to end up dead last? save yourself the 6 mil...Katz can buy himself a new house or something...

And they are officially the Winnipeg Jets.
