Why OB picked KU over Mizzou

A poor title game may be enough for someone to play their way out of the BCS. That turned out to be the crux behind the Orange Bowl's chosen matchup, when Missouri's decisive loss to Oklahoma for the Big 12 championship apparently knocked them down the pecking order. Kansas, which had lost to Missouri one week earlier, got Sunday's invitation to face ACC champion Virginia Tech in the Jan. 3 game. ''The fact that Oklahoma won in pretty convincing fashion [swayed things],'' Orange Bowl chief executive Eric Poms said Monday. ``We felt that we prefer to have a one-loss team.'' KU's perception also has been hurt by a weak schedule, ranked just 88th of 119 Division I teams in the Sagarin computations. Thanks to Big 12 scheduling irregularities, the Jayhawks faced neither Oklahoma nor Texas this year. And their nonconference slate featured FIU, two Mid-American Conference foes and lower-division Southeastern Louisiana. Coach Mark Mangino acknowledged the disparity, but offered no apology.

Kansas is the only team worse than Illinois in a BCS bowl. It just speaks on how shoddy this BCS system is to take Kansas over Missouri, who is obviously the better team.

KU had a weak schedule... Missouri was number one and lost. They deserved the bid by beating KU. Both teams deserved a look.. great year. It is not there fault their conference is weak and their schedule out of conference is a joke. With the BCS system and no playoffs.. cannot blame them. At least they won against teams they should beat.. unlike many teams; West Virginia.

Actually drj...their non-conference schedule IS their fault

December 4, 2007  09:43 AM ET

No.. If I could not get a playoff and could have a shot at a national title playing joke teams.. who wouldn't I? It is the system that allows teams to play soft schedules and still get a shot over teams that play week to week great teams. Blame the BCS mess not the team. Why would you play a hard non conference schedule if it did not matter and all the system cared about was a win?

I bet it had something to do with the YouTube of Chase Daniel picking his nose and eating it.

December 4, 2007  10:08 AM ET

I agree Frank.

By the way what size is Mangino's jacket? That thing has to be custom made!

December 4, 2007  10:09 AM ET

What's this? Sly's lesser known. surpisingly less talented brother?

December 4, 2007  10:10 AM ET

Mangino has a deal with Tent City in Lawrence.....he wear's their tents during the games....

December 4, 2007  10:14 AM ET

KU---4ever...but how do you go the whole season and not play Texas or OU...that doesn't make much of a case for the Jayhawks and the BCS....

December 4, 2007  10:17 AM ET

I agree. The truth... stupid words. I thought you were a sports fan not an idiot. Saying to me to like my ..... is truly a sign you need the truth.

BCS should stand for Bias Championship Series this year.... What a total joke for the BCS... KU and Illnois, come on!! Mizzou beat both of those teams head to head. Then they faulter one game against one of the best team in the country, now they are out of the BCS. I just want to know who is sitting behind the scenes and selecting these teams. Obviously they didn't follow any of the games this year!!! You are rewarding teams that plays a weak schedule and doesn't have conference championship. Why is WV in the BCS! WV lost to unknown teams... Big East, please, stick to Basketball or something. My prediction for the Feista bowl is OU 60 WV 10.. Not even worth watching...
What's the deal with this rule that only 2 teams from each conference can go to the BCS.

Here is what I think it should be

National championship should have been OU and LSU
Orange Hawaii(good to see Hawii get a shot) and Va Tech
Rose bowl Georgia and USC
Fiesta Bowl Mizzou and Ohio State
Sugar BC and WV

December 4, 2007  10:24 AM ET

Good picks.. I agree. Illinios in the Rose was a joke. Missouri was hosed and should be in a BCS game. Georgia at 10-2 playing Hawaii; win or lose; is a joke. They should play USC. Hawaii against VT would have beeen fun to watch.

December 4, 2007  10:31 AM ET

When the Orange Bowl committee passed over Mizzou and chose KU, they made a horrible choice that adversely affected other BCS choices. The Bowls should obviously have no say at all. If the choices are made to maximize the viewer or fan base, then why have the BCS at all? And who would think that KU would bring more fans than MU anyway? This is a colossal error that unfairly affects Mizzou and is irreparable.

December 4, 2007  10:34 AM ET

Drj..it was a joke.....you're a bulldog? Bulldogs lick their ****? Lighten up!

December 4, 2007  10:40 AM ET

I would hope that the only reason that MU fell out of the BCS was b/c there offense was weak agnst OU w/the injuries to Coffman & now D.Alexander torn ACL out for the yr. But, if it wasn't how & why can MU be left out, unless the powers that be in the BCS thought & said that they didn't want 3 Big 12 Teams there wanting to spread out the dollars over more conferences??!!

December 4, 2007  10:47 AM ET

Coach Mangino: Ya'all come on down to TENT CITY. Right now until December 24th, buy one tent get the other at 50% off.

Tell 'em Coach sent ya!

December 4, 2007  11:06 AM ET

This was the one glaring mistake in this year's BCS, that Kansas got in over Missouri.

The BCS title game was a free-for-all, in the end it was decided strictly by the coaches' vote. There was no right answer on that one.

But giving the Jayahawks the nod over Mizzou, there's no way to justify that. As a Big12 fan, I'm pissed that the stronger team isn't going to the game.

December 4, 2007  11:08 AM ET

Crazy!!!

Playoff system

Take top 16 like NCAA hoops and Division I-AA do.....

No byes, make teams earn it.....

1 vs 16
2 vs 15
3 vs 14
4 vs 13

The 8 vs 9 matchups wld be solid just like in NCAA tournament

December 4, 2007  11:11 AM ET

DJ, that means at best one team from the lesser conferences gets in. This year BYU, Boise, and Hawaii could probably all make decent arguments to play.
