Tebow jabs back at Hawaii coach

Back at you, June Jones. Florida quarterback Tim Tebow joked with reporters on Monday about the comments made by Jones, Hawaii's coach who said on Sunday that Tebow's success this season was because of the Gators' spread offense. Tebow kept referring to the word ''system'' throughout a post-practice interview. Reporters laughed. So, could Tebow have success in a run-and-shoot offense similar to Hawaii's? ''I ran it a little bit in high school and my numbers weren't too bad there, so I guess it depends on your system,'' Tebow said. As for Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan? ''He's a good quarterback and runs a good system,'' Tebow said.

If Colt Brennan was the QB for the Gators, and Tebow was the QB for Hawaii, Tebow wouldn't stand a chance at wining the Heisman, and Brennan would be the shue-in for it. This is no slap at Tebow, who is excellent. The Heisman voters think that Hawaii really isn't part of the USA, and the vote has become so political. Colt would have to be the QB for a school in the SEC, Big-10, or play for USC or Notre Dame to have any real chance. His amazing numbers are ignored by truly blind voters who SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO VOTE.

I think it's pretty pathetic that a coach has to verbally attack another player from another team to draw attention to his own guy. I do understand that the media attention is primarily centered around the East coast, and anyone outside of that is at a bit of a disadvantage as far as media coverage, but facts are facts man. Let's not overlook the obvious here. EVERY QB IS A SYSTEM QB!!!!!! A QB has to be a good QB to run any system at this level and beyond. It just so happens that Tebow is the perfect fit for this system, and vice versa. I call it great recruiting.

IMHO, there is a chance that we will never see these types of numbers from a QB again. UF will undoubtedly have a "feature" running back next year (Emmanuel Moody will be the one), taking the majority of the running burden off of Tebow.

Layoff the narcotics Alfred. Just wait until Brennan faces a team from a real conference in the Sugar Bowl. You will wish that you were back in the WAC playing whack opponents. Your boy Brennan will be relegated to the likes of Timmy Chang.......BTW, where the heck is he?

Oh boy I can't wait for game #1 in the Swamp next year.......might as well stay on "the Rock" Rainbow Warriors.

Who really heard the interview of June Jones? I did and I know he was not taking a shot at Tebow. He was simply trying to say how good of a quarterback he had at Hawaii and that he was simply "one of a kind" but by no means was he taking a shot. Just calm down Florida boys.

December 4, 2007  08:44 AM ET

absolutely he was taking a shot. were you listening to the same interview as the rest of the nation? even the folks at ESPN were shocked on how un professional the jabs were. as a head coach, you need to show how to act for your kids, and by attacking a student that has never done anything to him, i question June Jones' ethics. I think it boils down to him wanting to say that he coached a heisman QB at Hawaii...

What planet are you on dlluah06? Obviously the same one as Alfred.......

December 4, 2007  09:27 AM ET

Its just like little man syndrome, Hawaii wants to start a fight with any of the big boys they can, to try and prove how tough they are....
Problem being just like with most small guys, the bigger guys could care less, they are more worried about other things...
Go be happy you got into a BCS game, leave Tebow and UF alone they are out of your league....

I agree with Jones' comments, just not the way he worded it. Brennan can make any throw and that was his point. Tebow is a tremendous play maker when running the ball, but a marginal thrower.

December 4, 2007  09:29 AM ET

The ESPN guys made more of a deal than this than it was. They all love to kiss and hug on each other. I agree with Jones' comments, but he worded them poorly. His point was that Hawaii's system is a pro system, and Brennan can (and has shown) he can make any throw on the field. Tebow is a play maker because he runs the ball, and Florida's offense is based on the QB's strength. You have to admit, he is an average thrower. Unfortunately, the controversy will result in Florida hanging 49 points on my Michigan guys, and I'm sure if McFadden or Brennan wins the Heisman, they'll roll up 80+ points.

As much as I hate the Gators...I like Tebow. That is pretty funny stuff to continue to use the term "system" in his interview.

December 4, 2007  09:42 AM ET

29 TD's and a completion percentage higher than any other Heisman Trophy winner (we won't even get into the TD/pass attempt statistics when you compare them to the other heisman candidates)........am I missing something here about Tebow's "average" throwing ability. I actually can't believe that there are still people out there saying this. Is he Tom Brady? Of course not, but he is a Sophomore that is league's ahead of most at this point in his career. I do admit that his release is still slower than it needs to be, but he has good vision and touch on the ball.

I'm sure the next thing we will here is about Tebow throwing "dump off" passes to pad his completion percentage......

December 4, 2007  09:42 AM ET

Okay....June Jones has NO room to criticize a Tebow or this program he plays for, or even the system. The Run n' Shoot was a 90's fad offense that was a textbook case for making players look better than they actually were. Plus, JUNE...you coach Hawaii. Hawaii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

December 4, 2007  09:43 AM ET

I hate fricken Florida..but Tebow deserves the heisman

December 4, 2007  09:43 AM ET

OK. I can't see Brennan putting up Tebow's numbers if he were at Florida. First of all, Tebow and Harvin are pretty much all that Florida has for an offense.

Taken from SI's website:

Tebow - 6' 3", 235 lbs.
Brennan - 6' 3", 195 lbs.

Tebow has 40 pounds on Brennan! No way is Brennan rushing for 20 TDs in the SEC. The threat of Tebow running is what keeps the defense honest.

More stats from SI:

Rushing Yards:
Tebow: 838 yds
Brennan: 65 yds

Yeah, June, it's the system and not the player.
