Venables: Stats don't matter

08:18 AM ET 06.27 | No one will be surprised to see Oklahoma considered among the top two teams in most preseason polls. But the key to playing in the national title game isn't how a handful of new starters fare. "At the end of the day all the other stats [don't matter]," said defensive coordinator Brent Venables. "If you win the battle up front on both sides of the ball, you're going to have a good chance to win virtually every game. I really believe that will be the backbone of what we do. We have some talented parts around them, but they really have to be the backbone of what we do. Our best teams here [have been good on the line] on both sides of the ball. They can definitely get there. It's just improving across the board."

QUOTE(#4):

For D2: Who exactly do the Sooners have on OL/DL for Venables to make this claim?

a center, two guards and two tackles on O-line...four guys on the D-line with 3 linebackers.

That is the SEC not the Big 12. Only the SEC plays defense. ;)

Not sure exactly who, but they don't recruit just RB and QB's....last signing class they signed 10 DL and OL out of 17....and they are 3-4 star guys.

Venable is not a bad coach, so I believe when he says they will do good....we'll just have to wait and see

But....for a couple...

QUOTE(#11):

No they don't, but the really good teams end up very high in the stats for a reason, because they do something right and win their games, so in that sense they do matter.

Well...as long as you don't score a LOT of points against ranked opponents...then you get accused of other things.

:)

Actually a lot of records for passing or running are held by guys you have heard very little about...if I remember that guy from Hawaii had some impressive stats passing but not sure where he is now...and then there are the QB's from TTU that aren't doing much these days...

... I am, however, surprised to see OU ranked #1 in some polls because they can't ever win a big game, lose every bowl game they play in, haven't won a Championship in forever, play in the worst conference in CFB, and the SEC has won the last 10 BCS championships, so why the hell is a Big-12 team now going to win it. Hell, Oklahoma can't even compete in a bowl game, let alone win one. Why not just put Alabama at #1 and cut the BS.
