Ravens: Calls favored Patriots

A furor has ignited over the conduct of the officiating crew during the game-winning touchdown drive that saved the Patriots' perfect season. The Ravens were upset about a series of calls that they felt favored the Patriots and made their comeback possible. The Ravens' comments will certainly provide fodder for those who believe that the Patriots are getting plenty of breaks from the officials. Suggs said he thinks everybody is cheering for New England to go undefeated and break all the records, something the Patriots might find surprising, considering the amount of vitriol they have received from those who are still talking about the video scandal that engulfed the start of the season. "It's hard to go out there and play the Patriots and the refs at the same time," Ravens cornerback Chris McAlister said. "They put the crown on top and they want them to win."

ravens might have a case here. but there is no court in the land that can help them. take a box of tissues, know YOU lost the game, and don't let the door hit you in the butt.

if the ravens had passed some in the 4th quarter, rather than running nonstop and gaining nothing, even gaining a first down in the 4th quarter, they might have won. BUT they didn't and put the Pats in a position to win. To beat the champ, you have to knock him out. the ravens played not to lose, which always ends in a loss.

C'mon, bad officiating is part of the game, like it or not. Maybe Baltimore did get screwed by the officials, but i doubt its because they have some ulterior motive to help the Pats.
Just the contrary, everyone but Pats fans wants them to lose and thats OK. Bring it on. If they succeed give them credit, if they don't, they don't. It will have been a heck of an effort. Perfection is very rare.

December 5, 2007  06:39 AM ET

There could have been bad calls, but none of them were on the plays that they are complaining about. And what about Derrick Mason TACKLING the DB so the hail mary play at the end has a chance? Are they crying about THAT bad call, too?

December 5, 2007  07:02 AM ET

It all came down to the coaches terrible but reactive decision to call a timeout on that 4th and 1. They had Brady sacked and would have won the game. You know that's eating his insides now.

It's not that everyone wants the Pats to lose is that everyone loves the giant killer (i.e. David slueth). There is no doubt that this team will rank as one of the best of all time. Tom Brady will be talked about in the same conversation as Joe Montana and Johnny Unitas. I'm sure there were millions that wanted the Dolphins to lose one in 1972 as well. Just the nature of the beast.

December 5, 2007  07:25 AM ET

That game reminded me of the boys n bills game earlier this year. You can't keep giving a team 4 or 5 chances.

December 5, 2007  07:50 AM ET

On NFL Live, they broke down each one of those penalties and it clearly showed that every call that was made should have been called. There were also penalties committed by the Ravens in critical situations that weren't called.

Quite frankly, they need to stop crying because no one caused them to lose that game but themselves.

But I will say this: I have never seen anyone pick up a ref's flag and chuck it like that. That was quited entertaining! Wish i had that one on tape...

I think NFL Network has this game as one of its "replay games" this week. You can tape it then......

-true.

"they need to stop crying because no one caused them to lose that game but themselves. "

- exactly.

What's new here? The Refs seem to always go in The Pats favor ever since they got the calls when the Raiders played them and they went to the SB.S>O>S> different day and year.I wonder if The Pats went from cheating to paying off the Refs...........HMMMMMM Makes me wonder......

December 5, 2007  09:13 AM ET

If the coach doesn't call that time out on fourth and one the Ravens win. The defense was deflated after that. They kept on shooting themselves in the foot there on out.

December 5, 2007  09:25 AM ET

I think the biggest problem I had with the game is the comment the ref made....(are what Chris MAC said he made)....refs arent suppose to that...how can he call that man a boy....good thing it was a blk ref because if he was white MAN it would've been TROUBLE.....i understand that refs are humans and they make mistakes but calling him a boy was over the line

Rada4life, if that makes you wonder, you must have a lot of problems with things. Instead of the same old baseless inuendo, why don't you highlight which calls were bad, or made specifically in the Pats' favor? Because football people much smarter than you have already done this, and it pretty much all came down AGAINST what the Ravens are saying.

So, lay out the calls that "make you wonder", and after you get picked apart, we can all have a good laugh...

December 5, 2007  09:50 AM ET

The Ravens are a team with a bunch of big personalities, with big egos attached. Of course they didn't actually lose the game on their own, the refs had to have made them lose. Time to face reality Ravens: your team is only some years good, and certainly has not been great since the Superbowl year.

December 5, 2007  10:09 AM ET

I never saw anything in that game that the refs did that wasn't called for. Except miss a pass interference call on the offense on the final Hail Mary.

The key play was the Rex Ryan gaffe. Everything else was self inflicted.

And honestly, the better team won.

December 5, 2007  10:17 AM ET

Yes, I understand that there are bad calls in every game....but there are too many times where refs get caught up in the moment and make some terrible calls, that clearly effect the outcome of the game, and if we don't think that is true then we are just oblivious....just watch any duke game, they will get at least 75% of questionable calls....clearly the refs got caught up in the moment on Mon night.....how many times do you see a fall start called after someone is tackled, that is always called before the snap, they waited till after the tackle was made to throw the flag, makes you wonder if they picked up the first down if he would have thrown it at all.

You can sit there and point to 20 different plays where the Ravens should have done something different, but nobody plays a perfect game, you could point out a bunch of plays and situations where the Pats did things to not win the game...its apart of any sport, there are too many games where refs are making one-sided calls down the stretch....whether it was intentional or not is undetermined, but it happens.......a great example was that WVU-Pitt game......Big East refs with a possible Big East team going to the national championship if they win, those holding calls on Pitt in the 4th quarter were true crimes....the ref waited till after the play was over in both situations to bail out WVU, just like the refs did on Mon night against the Ravens....if you watch game film of this game, you will see that o-line hold Nagata at least 10 times and it was never called......maybe the refs got caught up in the hype of the Pats, or maybe they just disliked the Ravens, but there's factual evidence that showed that game was called one-sided and anyone who can see the whole field on every play would agree unless they had a rooting interest with the pats....

December 5, 2007  10:45 AM ET

Ravens, that's complete hogwash. You people with these baseless conspiracy theories are completely out of touch with reality.

If the situation were reversed and it was your team that won, then you would see nothing wrong with the officiating.

You have NO proof and everyone here saw the game and disagrees with you. But for some strange reason, you still believe what you do. That's the true definition of a biased opinion.

December 5, 2007  10:51 AM ET

same ole same ole to me...they have always gotten all of the big game calls....pass interference on the final drive against carolina that set up the FG...the bs tuck rule against the raiders....it goes on and on....but monday nite was perhaps the most obvious...come on...that was the most sickening thing that ive seen on a football field....It looks like the WWF now....im neither a pats fan or a ravens fan...i just love a great evenly played game...a fair game....that game wasnt fair...the ravens played a great game and it was stolen from them by some ref's decision to give the best team in the league an extra edge....the NFL better get it together real quick or it will go the way of the NBA...that game looked fixed to me...and I have seen alot of football in my time....the ref's would not let the pat's lose....and thats terrible for the league....why do you think that the ref's have not been that big of an issue up until now?...its because this was even worse...this was obvious

There are questionable calls in every game. The Ravens defense became frustrated after that bonehead timeout was called. Then they let the stupid penalties snowball on them. I mean, come on! You throw a flag to the crowd and expect sympathy from the officials! That is disrespect to them and they can and WILL make you pay.
