Did Carr put kibosh on Miles?

There was a growing movement at Michigan to stop Les Miles from getting this job. Fans pin this on Lloyd Carr, whose aversion to Miles is widely known. But Carr is definitely not the only person who thinks Miles is a bad fit for Michigan. Through intermediaries, the Free Press learned through multiple sources in the Michigan and the Miles camps, U-M had gone way down the line with Miles -- to the point where contract length and terms were no longer an issue and discussion had moved to his staff. From all indications, athletic director Bill Martin had pinpointed Miles as his guy early. Right up until Saturday's announcement that Miles was staying at LSU, many people at Michigan believed Miles was still Martin's guy.

Llloyd Carr retired for the school to get off to a god start with recruits not for Miles to come.

How about just winning a BCS championship game at LSU and staying put? Why go running off to the Big 10? The SEC too tough for you? You want a schedule with only one tough game per year? Or maybe you want to prove yourself better than Carr by beating App State!

This coach tampering during the season is a bit out of control. Why doesn't the NCAA do something about it. The conflict of interest is obvious. Had only Missouri or WV lost instead of both. Ohio State goes to the championship instead of LSU. The Big 10 including Michigan gets millions in extra income after the LSU loss to Arkansas.

I'm not saying the game was thrown. I'm saying the conflict of interest is obvious. You can't allow that kind of conflict of interest.

If Michigan is still listening to that idiot, they deserve to continue being the punchline of App State and Ohio State jokes.

December 5, 2007  08:39 AM ET

Fuzzy, you can't blame Miles for possibly wanting the job at Michigan....it's where he went to college. And yeah, it would be nice to see LSU beat Ohio State....

I love how current truth and rumors is. It's almost like they're on the cutting edge of sports rumors all the time, and not weeks behind sports bloggers. Oh wait.

December 5, 2007  08:55 AM ET

Yah, but what Miles won't tell you is that he was passed over by Ohio State during recruitment...Miles is from Ohio, and Ohio State wasn't interested in his scrub-****.

But hats off to Carr. He is concerned about the integrity of his program. Landing what the fans think of as the "right" choice is ultimately Martin's goal. Carr doesn't have to worry about the ill-informed whims of some Michigan fans (most of whom are too young to have known Carr's better years and most of whom never went to Michigan and hence have no stake in the outcome).

Miles is a child, a loud bombastic guy suffering from little man syndrome. He also strikes me as the closeted alcoholic type. Where does a guy like that belong?

Where else but Dixieland? You can keep him, SEC.

December 5, 2007  09:11 AM ET

Interesting story, but non-issue on this snowy Weds. morning. I have said this before, and I wanna say it again...UM needs to go outside the "family" for their next heah coach.

I do believe that Miles was genuinely interested in the Michigan job until LSU's 11th hour contract offer. But I think he has cut any possible roads back to Ann Arbor.

December 5, 2007  09:11 AM ET

We'll keep him.

Miles told the senior players a week before the Championship game that they would be hearing a lot of talk about him leaving, and that he would be staying at LSU. They kept it within the team.....he made the press conference because of the ESPN announcement.

You guys can say what you want about Miles but he's got grit, huge sack, and he's confident. I'm more than happy to have him...he may not be the best, but he's a helluva alot better than 90% of the coaches out there.

December 5, 2007  09:24 AM ET

I don't think Carr really has that kind of pull so I'm going to say 'bull' to this story...

December 5, 2007  09:26 AM ET

I don't know if Carr is interfering or not. But if he retired early to not harm recruiting, it certainly isn't working. Many recruits are going to start looking around as back ups.

Maybe it would have been better to have secretly interviewed coaches, hired one and then have Carr announce his retirement. That way the new coach could have swooped in an instant to start securing the verbals.

Kinda like what Ole Miss and Houston Nutt did?

Who cares what Lloyd Carr wants or doesn't want.....he's history. I'm just curious as to why some people find it so hard to believe that Les Miles WANTS to stay at LSU. Theres an excellent chance that he's about to win a National Championship in a year when Michigan lost to a non BCS team. But this bottom line is this byline is a much of bull****!

December 5, 2007  09:34 AM ET

This story is definitely getting beaten into the ground.... Move on already...

December 5, 2007  09:36 AM ET

Houston Nutt wanted out of RKansas and everyone knew that....he ticked off too many fans last year over something...dunno the details.

I believe Miles...for some odd reason. He seems sincere.

December 5, 2007  09:37 AM ET

Most LSU fans would have been happy to see Miles go to Michigan. He's a goofball. He's had the luxury of playing with Saban's team, and having enough talent to win through his inept coaching. If story is true, Carr's greatest moment with Michigan was keeping Miles out of Michigan.

December 5, 2007  09:38 AM ET

Miles indeed seems sincere and he's an awfully nice fellow. But he should be coaching the offensive line. He's an inept head coach.

Dylan:

No offense...but nice man? Sincere? Les seems anything BUT those two things. Have you seen or heard him in a press conference?
