Is Miami coach's job safe?

We're told the Miami administration remains confident in Randy Shannon off a 5-7 season and believes he deserves at least two more recruiting classes before being judged. ''The best is yet to come,'' president Donna Shalala said. But several prominent trustees have expressed concerns about why some players didn't improve or seem motivated.

This is getting ridiculous! Now a guy has to turn things around in ONE SEASON or he's on the hot seat?! People's expectations are getting out of hand.

On the other hand, if Shannon were coaching at Notre Dame, with a 5-7 record, he would apparently get AT LEAST a 15 year contract extension!

It BETTER be safe! How's he expected to fix a screwed up program in one year? They at least have to give him a chance to show what he can do with the players that HE recruits...

But you know how the cookie crumbles... "Certain" coaches are on a tighter leash, so it wouldn't surprise me if they ax him. Look at what happened to Willingham at ND.

eyesWIDEopen,
I agree, the same goes for Bopwden at FSU. You can't take years of recruiting and culture and change it in a matter of one season. Both of these teams will improve next season and Randy is a good fit for the U.

The alums are pissed cause Randy Shannon wasnt the "Big Name" coach they really wanted. I think the AD did the right thing when he hired him. Let the guy have a shot.

"eyesWIDEopen,
I agree, the same goes for Bowden at FSU."
Sorry but I fail to see the comparison Coach Shannon is dealing with the mess from the Coker era Bowden is dealing with a mess of his own creation since he's been the one in "charge" forever.
" I think the AD did the right thing "
I like Randy as coach but PLEASE don't credit Paul Dee with doing anything right

Not a fan of the U or Shannon..but come on...it takes more than a season to turn a program around!!!

December 5, 2007  10:13 AM ET

Damn you Donna Shalala!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

December 5, 2007  10:36 AM ET

Players love the guy.

They should extend him through 2020, and throw in an Easy Bake oven.

December 5, 2007  10:39 AM ET

I guess they figured the last coach they hired got them a National Championship right out of the box, and figured the same thing should happen here.

Of course, look what happened later on.

December 5, 2007  10:43 AM ET

What? It's one year. Shalala is proving her idiocracy by even considering firing a good coach who's bringing in a top 5 recruiting class.

December 5, 2007  11:03 AM ET

Shalala is proving her idiocy? I thought she had already done that while she was Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Clinton Administration?

December 5, 2007  11:10 AM ET

They're not going to fire him.

December 5, 2007  11:38 AM ET

Some players seemed unmovitated.....were these the players that Shannon recruited or the ones that the last great coach placed here...he is gonna need at least 2 more years

December 5, 2007  12:01 PM ET

Look at the bright side Cane Fans....when Hillary is elected maybe Donna Shalala will return to her former post?

i am not a fan of shannon. i thought the U should have looked for outside help to fix this mess. miami needs to get rid of its "hood life gangsta" persona and get back to just being student athletes. i think a recruite summed it up best when he said that miami players are more concerned about going to Da club than winning games.
ps dr shalela wants a winning team in the worst way, and that is one reason why she took the UM job, because she wants a school with good football. i just hope she doesn't go dan snyder on us and meedle too much.

December 5, 2007  02:38 PM ET

Shalala was probably the only woman in Clinton's administration that he DIDN'T try to get a **** from.

December 5, 2007  02:39 PM ET

Cripes, they filtered out hand j.o.b. out

December 5, 2007  03:39 PM ET

Shannon deserves a chance to rebuild the program. The state of Florida has an abundance of home grown talent that is only rivaled by Texas and California. The true test is in his and his staffs recruiting abilities to tap into and motivate the talent base. As a Hokie Fan we need a strong Miami and and Florida State to strengthen the ACC and our own teams ability to recruit.

you can trype cripes but you can't type handy job? That's a little arbitrary ain't it?
