08:14 AM ET 06.30 | Phil Hughes hit the low 90s, unofficially, and struck out eight in just over six innings of work Wednesday at Trenton. [Hughes] thinks he's nearly ready to return to the Bronx. Wednesday, he did everything he could to make Yankee brass feel the same. With Brian Cashman and VP of baseball operations Mark Newman watching, Hughes pieced together the most impressive outing of his rehab assignment, making a second straight start for the Double A Trenton Thunder and showcasing improved control and endurance. When the 3-2 win over New Hampshire was over, the right-hander couldn't help admitting that he'd love for his next start to be in the majors. "Absolutely, if they asked me," said Hughes, who has been on the DL since April 15 with shoulder inflammation. "But I know they won't."

If they could - start him at AAA a couple of times before jumping back in to the MLB.

Hardly. He is young.

Young players can suck too. So far, based on his performance to date, all you can say about Hughes is that (at his best) he's mediocre.

And, as I recall, if he is hitting low 90s with his fastball, his velocity is still down a bit from where it was...so more time needed in the minors

Most playes in the bigs have no problems turning around a low 90's fast ball. But if he can actually control it that will be what makes it. I wouldn't get too excited about a win in double A, though getting his endurance up should be a good sign.

Three day weekend is sufficient then to fill one with hope - whether it be to enjoy the day - or not to turn it into a shooting spree.

A three day shooting spree? I like it.
