08:05 AM ET 06.30 | A recent story on the Jaguars' official website essentially cemented Blaine Gabbert as the team's No. 2 quarterback when camp opens. Since the day he was drafted 10th overall, [Gabbert] has been very careful to show respect for both David Garrard and backup quarterback Luke McCown. So his response when I asked him about Koetter's plan should not have surprised me. "The biggest thing, I want to come in and learn the offense, be in the film room with Luke and Dave and just have the opportunity to play with those guys who have been in the league a long time," Gabbert said. "Just come in as a rookie, to compete, learn." If you want fodder for a quarterback controversy look elsewhere.

Gabbert has the right idea. If he comes in and learns the offense and studies film he should have no problem unseating Garrard and McCown. Just showing up should be enough.

Yes, because it will give cover for Del Rio to make them think there is a bright future . The head coach gets another free pass. win/win. If Garrard wins games he looks good, if he loses and the rookie plays he looks like the great mentor figure.

Here in Texas, cheerleader tryouts aren't nearly this diplomatic.

What he really is saying is "I don't want to come in on week 1 and get the crapped kicked out of me, and then get the crap kicked out of me week after week until I'm physically and mentally broken and my career is over".
Sounds like he'd prefer some sideline clipboard duty until he learns what's what. Sounds smart to me. Let Garrard take the pummeling.

It's pretty easy to "masterfully" avoid a QB controversy, when you can't even get into camp to see how much better you think you are than the other guy...isn't it?
