08:09 AM ET 06.30 | Nene is taking his talents to the open market. Now the real work begins for the Nuggets in trying to retain their starting center. Nene will opt out of the final year of his contract worth nearly $12 million and, as a result, become an unrestricted free agent, a source familiar with the situation said Wednesday night. It means Nene can sign with any team he wishes without the Nuggets getting a chance to match the offer when free agency begins after the expected NBA lockout, which likely will start Friday. Nene had until today to make a final decision. The Nuggets tried to sign him to a contract extension before today, the last day of the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, but to no avail. Instead, Nene figures to have many suitors -- including the Nuggets -- as he explores his options.

Dallas is better off with Chandler who is a better defender and rebounder. With the new CBA expected to roll back salaries turning down $12 million in the last year of a deal is really risky.

How many will have the money he wants? I don't think he's leaving that much money on the table to go somewhere and play for the mid level exemption.

I haven't seen any reports or rumors that Nene didn't like being in Denver or the direction the team was headed either before or after the Anthony trade. I have seen several reports though that he was upset earlier in the season with Denver's management about not getting a contract extention. Could he go somewhere for less money to be closer to a championship yes but I'm inclined to think he is like most athletes who no matter how much money they have made will look to make more when the opportunity arises. I'm not judging Nene saying its a good thing or a bad I'm just saying that history has shown thats what most free agents which is go where the money is.

Interesting assessment, Doc. I know for a fact that you are right, money ISN'T everything. And once you are making a sufficient enough income to sustain your bills, quality of life becomes even more important than how fat your bankroll is. Right after I retired from the military, I was working as a contractor with Lockheed Martin. Now, I didn't make as much as I do now, but the quality of life was outstanding. Flex hours, paid every week, a phenomonal benefits plan, free dental, and working on the cutting edge of aviation were all things that I sorely miss right now. So I know that you are speaking the truth. Good post.

Dallas can not sign him unless it involves a trade...
They are already over the cap without re-signing Chandler, Butler, Berea and Stevenson.
More than likely, they will keep their own and make another run.

What is all this about Dallas and the Knicks? Do you people have any concept of cap space? Neither team has ANY to sign Nene. Only teams with cap space can sign Nene as a free agent.

Typical Knicks fan with no concept of cap space and the incredible burden the Amare/Melo contracts together are going to put on that franchise. Let me guess... you are going to trade Billups for Nash? No wait, CP3! No wait, Dwight Howard!
