Michigan AD MIA for Miles call
Posted: Wednesday December 05, 2007 05:48AM ET
Last Friday evening, word filtered back to Ann Arbor: LSU was trying to sign football coach Les Miles to a huge extension. Miles was widely believed to prefer the Michigan job. He had sent signals through back channels for weeks, and he knew the terms of a pending five-year Michigan offer. But now he needed to know, for sure, that he was Michigan's man. U-M athletic director Bill Martin could not provide that assurance. Martin did not even tell Miles' representatives to hang on and wait until their Sunday or Monday interview. He didn't tell Miles, or anybody else, anything. Multiple people at U-M have told the Free Press that Martin was nowhere to be found. Several people tried to reach him, in pretty much every way. They all struck out. We live in the era of constant communication: cell phones, text messaging, e-mails, BlackBerries, Sidekicks, iPhones. Yet nobody could find Bill Martin. He was unreachable. One person familiar with what happened said Martin was in Florida.

This guy could turn out to be one of the most over-rated coaches ever.

Report Offensive CommentPerhaps in this day and age of instant communication...this was Martin's way of passively taking the offer off the table?
Conspiracy theorists may take the reigns here....

Report Offensive CommentMiles is conservative so yeah, he probably *is* overrated as a coach. A head coach is only as good as his assistants....I heard Pellini clashed w/ Miles over defensive calls, schemes and game planning. Let's just see, if Miles doesn't shock me and NOT go to Michigan even w/ all this hubbabaloo that he's not, if LSU's defense regresses even more next season....

I guess you haven't watched any LSU football this season....he's went for more 4th down plays and fieldgoal/punt fakes than I've ever seen at LSU in the last 25 years......put together.

Report Offensive CommentMiles is conservative? Based on 2007, that's an odd statement. That said, I doubt Miles realizes always what quarter the game is in, much less what down it is. Fulmer is no longer the goofiest coach in the SEC.

Report Offensive CommentI'm with TRUTH on this. I think not trying is not a failure, it is success at avoiding to choose between a "michigan man" that all the fans wanted, and the kind of man that michigan wants to be the face of their university.

Report Offensive CommentTo add to my earlier statement....imagine the flack Martin would take had he NOT pursued Miles?

Report Offensive CommentMichigan should be looking at guys like Muschamp or Venables at OK. These names have completely stayed out of the press, which both pleases me and makes me nervous at the same time that they might not be getting consideration as options.
