08:10 AM ET 06.30 | Steve Ballmer certainly has the money to become a season ticket holder in Seattle -- but he's not hopeful the finances would work out any time soon. Seattle won't get a new NBA franchise until it figures out its arena problem, [Ballmer] said Wednesday. "The challenge there is a real estate challenge," Ballmer said during a Seattle Rotary Club lunch at the Westin Hotel, according to the Seattle Times. "Honestly, the building that is Key Arena would not be able to have an NBA team that would be competitive." Ballmer said without a competitive building, which could cost as much as $500 million, a future team could not sell tickets at a competitive rate to generate revenues. He said KeyArena will never be a viable option for a new NBA team.

Of course it did....You give that town a new arena and the New Orleans Hornets and you got yourself a good team and fan base....

Hmmmm. I'm up here in Seattle, and life really isn't any different without an NBA team.
We still get up, go to work, have fun. And once in a while we watch the NBA on tv, which is the only place we could afford to watch it anyway, given ticket prices. So use that tax money to pay off the new bridge and tunnel you're trying to build up here.

Lots of big money in Seattle but don't look to taxpayers. Take a page out of the late great Bill Davidson (former Pistons owner) who built the nations first privately funded sports arena, The Palace of Auburn Hills. If it can be done in Detroit, it can be done in Seattle.

Pittsburgh has a brand spanking new arena--maybe NO will end up there. In the 50s and 60s there was an AHL franchise called the Hornets. Yeah, right.

"I have recently been offered a position somewhere in the general area of Cleveland, Ohio and I wanted to put a few things forward. Much as I would like this job, which involves writing and editing in some manner, I do have some requirements for the position. Not the least of which is the simple fact that Cleveland must stop sucking.
I grew up in the general Clevelandish area, in a god-awful place known as Northfield (yes, by the racetrack) and I used to defend the city vociferously. However, a few years away have taught me a few things and I have come to the conclusion that the city of Cleveland must stop sucking in order to be taken seriously."

"Suck it up and deal with it, Cleveland is a dump. Stop defending your city as though it is some sort of holy crusade to make everyone love the Mistake by the Lake. Nobody does (except Clevelanders) and nobody will until the city stops sucking. When somebody says something bad out the reclaimed swampland you live on (read the history), just smile, nod, and take it as a lesson. There is a reason for this.
Simply put, when everyone else in every other city thinks Cleveland is a steaming pile -- but Clevelanders think it's still awesome -- you are outnumbered. We live in a democracy. When every other city in the nation thinks your city sucks, they may be on to something."

Seattle won't get a new Arena until the Mariner's win multiple World Series! They need to fully justify building Safeco after the voter's turn it down! Their only Major Sports Champs couldn't get one when Ackerley owned them and there was ample space where the two stadiums now are! sad state of affairs! Mr. Ballmer talk with Paul Allen, He'll show you how to make it work! You'll have to build it before a team commits!

seattle wont get a new arena until the NBA team help chip in the cost for the building. Taxpayers cant be asked to pay 100% of the building and cannot get 100% of the ticket profits?

I had this same conversation with my roommate who is freom New Orleans. The problem in New Orleans is that most of the fanbase are Saints fans until the football season ends or however long the Saints keep playing. When you have to literally beg fans to come out and support somethings wrong. The best thing to do for both parties is to sell the team to someone and move them to a city that has the funds to support them. There lies the problem as most cities don't want a new team to cut in on their revenue ie LA, Chicago, and New York. You have to think within and outside of the box for this as you have a lot of cities to choose from but what would give that team money now. You could do an expansion team like the Bobcats and have each team drop players to fill the roster with some undrafted personnel and free agents looking for more playing time. There are so many possibilities but you have to be open to them.

I cannot believe that a bunch of billionaires are crying about trying to get taxpayer money to build a new arena for a bunch of millionaires to run up and down on and PLAY A GAME! Go ahead, NBA, take your ball and play somewhere else.
