Shuler a poor choice for Vols AD

08:19 AM ET 07.01 | Heath Shuler has been floated recently as a possibility to take over the Tennessee athletic department. [Shuler] for athletics director at the University of Tennessee, huh? Great. Next maybe we can talk Peyton Manning into early retirement from the NFL and have him replace Derek Dooley as football coach. And since Cuonzo Martin is still opening boxes at his office in Thompson-Boling Arena, why not take away his keys and convince Ernie Grunfeld to come back as basketball coach? Given the current state of athletics at UT, a lot of people are getting blinded by orange. They think the search for a new athletics director should begin and end with those who played for, coached for or at least cheered for the Vols for most of their lives. ... But you can't pigeon-hole yourself or your program.

So The Tennessean runs a piece opposing The Knoxville News Sentinel's piece from yesterday.

I agree with The Tennessean ... search for new athletics director needs to be broader than someone who played or coached the orange.

An Athletic Director's #1 job is to insulate the boosters from the coaches and players without alienating them - got to keep that cash flow streaming.
His #2 job is to make sure the school's chancellor is not undermining his efforts behind his back.
#3 job is to grow the programs across the entire spectrum.

It takes more skill than most ex-jocks can handle.

Pretty accurate Doc IMHO. However, that takes more skill than most anyone can handle, ex-jocks included!

I agree...But just looking/watching CD... He seems like a intelligent/scandal free guy.. Cares about UTk and He should be able to sell the program to the boosters... I am not saying they get Travis Henry

I was just commenting in general not targeted towards your suggestion of CD ...

At TX I think DeLoss Dodds (AD) lets Bill Powers (Prez) influence him too much sometimes - witnessed during the conference realignment craze last year. It's hard to argue with Dodd's track record but sometimes you have to go against your boss and earn your pay ...

what

Actually, now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind that much. Our AD is the guy who gave Chan Gailey and Paul Hewitt huge extensions after the only season where they ever did anything.

This position requires a person who can lie and cheat, recruit criminals and has a financial background where he can make payments to players without it being traced. After all it is the SEC.

The Tennessean (Nashville) does not care for UTK or the Vols.

Joan needs to hold the riegns while a very thorough search is conducted. The newspapers are throwing back smack, gargling their own drivel, fapping over their own prose... well, you get the picture.
