Did Jagr jilt Lemieux and Penguins?

09:00 AM ET 07.02 | Mario Lemieux was not sharing his thoughts Friday after Jaromir Jagr opted to resume his NHL career in Philadelphia, not with the Penguins. Suffice to say, Lemieux turning down an interview request was nowhere near as much of a shock as it was to learn that Jagr had accepted a one-year, $3.3 million contract from the Penguins' arch-rivals. This, after he had been quoted repeatedly in recent years about his boundless respect and admiration for Lemieux. After Jagr said a while back that he would work for the league minimum if that is what it took for him to have an opportunity to play for the team Lemieux owns. After his agent, Petr Svoboda, assured everyone who asked for the past 10 days or so that Jagr's emotional umbilical cord was connected directly to the NHL franchise in this city. Then again, maybe not.

I haven't talked to or read anything from any Pens fan that feels jilted.

Elated that this bag of selfish crap landed on somebody else's doorstep is more like it.

July 2, 2011  09:06 AM ET

I'm a Flyers fan and this sickens me

July 2, 2011  09:24 AM ET

I think Mario may have felt insulted by the treatment, because of whatever friendship he may have felt towards Jagr (and probably that has lessened after this perhaps) - but I'm sure everyone else involved with the team was able to convince him they dodged a bullet shortly thereafter. Espescially since it's now obvious it was more about the money.

July 2, 2011  09:29 AM ET

Now Pens fans have 2 reasons to boo Jagr when he plays.

July 2, 2011  09:43 AM ET

Didn't the Flyers get rid of Mike Richards and Jeff Carter because of problems in the locker room? So they traded away one problem for another??

July 2, 2011  09:50 AM ET

Hated to see Max go. He won the seventh game of the Cup for the Pens, but there are probably 5 guys in Wilkes-Barre that could do better than him. One thing I noticed late in the season though was that looked like he was channeling Matt Cooke at times. Made me wonder about him a little.

As far as Jagr goes this just shows that there was no loyalty, and no desire to play in Pittsburgh. He just wanted the money and to feed his ego. Can't wait to watch the Flyer fans reaction when he starts taking shifts off. Phantomphan, you have my condolences.

July 2, 2011  10:02 AM ET

don't know, don't care...move along people there is nothing to see/read here. Jagr will only play a few games this year and the rest of them he will dress and underperform...as usual. Talbot, scored a big goal, name on the cup and viola wants a big contact to boot.

July 2, 2011  10:09 AM ET

I was shocked when I read that he signed with the Flyers. That sealed it for me, he's one-way. I don't wish anything good for him in Philly that is for sure and I truly believe now by the way he tried to play the penguins that he will do what he does.........destroy a team.

July 2, 2011  10:39 AM ET

I like this signing and I am a die hard flyers fan. I've been watching Jagr play in the KHL for the last 2 years and he has been successful. Wouldn't be suprised if he puts up 25 goals this year for half the amount we would have paid Carter to put up 30. He creates his own shot instead of letting everyone else set him up like Carter. Not a bad stopgoat until the younger guys step in.

July 2, 2011  10:39 AM ET

I don't know which makes me happier, that he won't be in Pittsburgh, or that he takes his selfish immature attitude, and floating shifts to our fine rivals across state.

July 2, 2011  10:55 AM ET

I dunno guys. The Pens are still weak on the right side. Shero should have thrown a little more money at Jagr, instead of being his normal cheap self. Compared to the other free agent signings of yesterday (leino at 4 and change for 6 years, for ex.) 1 year at 3.3M is relatively low risk. He would have made your team better. I don't know why everyone expected him to blow off better deals to come to Pittsburgh. He was a free agent. Of course it was about the money. I don't expect Gagne to come back to Philly on the cheap.

All day yesterday til around 2pm all i heard form anyone was how great its going to be having Jagr on Crosby or Malkin's wing and how it was so great and yadda yadda yadda. So your GM low-balls him and he doesn't sign. Dur, welcome to free agency. Take some of your Jagr spite and point it at the GM. Its as much his fault as it is Jagr's. Yall been complaining about not paying for decent wingers for years now.

And for the record i'm not a big fan of this deal either. But for what its worth, a healthy Jagr would put up more for you then Sullivan would. Just sayin.

Max is likely the biggest loss here. Would have been nice to see Jagr back in a Pens uni but his signing shows who he is.

Third or fourth liners that pot 10 or less goals a year are not worth 1.5 mil for five years. Sure Max can kill penalties, and he is a 'good" guy on the team, just not worth the coin that the Flyers gave him. Replacing Max Talbot will not be difficult.

July 2, 2011  11:02 AM ET

Agree that there are no tears being shed in PGH. It's not like Jagr played his entire NHL career with the Pens. He's followed the money before. And I don't see how this makes the Flyers any better, either.

LOL Oh the reception that awaits him the first time the flyers visit the pens. I have to mark that down.

July 2, 2011  11:44 AM ET

The Pens removed their offer, no? So what's the story, removed it because he was being a dic or because they knew he was asking for too much? Hard to say they were jilted if they removed their offer, unless they did because their was little to no communication from Jagr's camp.

July 2, 2011  11:49 AM ET

Jagr is selfish and fits the flyers PERCTLTY!!!!!!

July 2, 2011  11:56 AM ET

Talbot is nothing worth what he got from the flyers neither. OVERPAY!!!!! game 7 was 2 years ago. 2 years ago. What Talbot done since then? NOTHING. 2009-2010 2 goals 5 assists 10 points 2010-2011 8 goals 13 assists 21 points WOW!!!! HALL OF FAME? I think not. Worth money flyers gave him? I think not. Again, Game 7 was 2 years ago, who cares, hes proven nothin since then.

Philly was soft as Charmin in the playoffs, especially against Boston and signing Jagr is their solution? Holy cow, I'm psyched at the moves the Flyers are making this off-season. They are headed straight for irrelevance the way they are going.

BTW, so far no one has touched on the upcoming dynamic between Jagr and the Flyers hard asss coach, Peter Laviolette. Should be a fun filled season down there in the City of Brotherly Love.
