08:14 AM ET 07.05 | San Francisco turned back the clock Monday to '02 -- 1902. For the first time since 1902, the Giants have failed to score more than six runs in 38 straight home games (their entire 2011 home schedule to date). Those '02 Giants, the only other outfit with a streak like that in franchise history, finished 53 1/2 games out of first place. Legendary Christy Mathewson, who was 21 at the start of that year, sported a 1.14 WHIP (not that he knew it) and 2.12 ERA but went 14-17. Madison Bumgarner, take note. "These guys swung well at times on the road," said manager Bruce Bochy, whose club went 4-3 on its most recent road trip and scored 13 and 15 runs, respectively, in games at Wrigley Field and Comerica Park, both hitter-friendly domiciles.

It would appear the Chronicle (and SI?) are bent on filling space on low news days with mindless trivia. (As am I?) If there's a point, it's failed to be articulated. These are, after all, the defending World Series champs. It is axiomatic that good pitching beats good hitting. Of note would have been the Giants' record over those 38 games.

The Red Sox have one of the best hitting teams in baseball and are about 3 games out. Perhaps a trivia piece on how many runs they gave up per game on their last road trip would be more compelling. And interesting.

Historically anemic...

Where is Bonds personal Trainer when ya need him?

July 5, 2011  12:15 PM ET

What was San Fran's record during that streak? Might have been a good fact to include.

July 5, 2011  12:23 PM ET

24-14 at home without scoring 6 runs in a single game

July 5, 2011  12:59 PM ET

The Giants scored 15 runs on Saturday. Perhaps that wasn't in the 38 day period. Which makes this really old 'news.'

Keep digging. You might turn up that they score most of their runs late in the game rather than early. So much 'news,' so little space.

Please let the Giants get a 6'8" pitcher with an attitude....

AT home....

Yo, techies!! Problems with your Fan Comments section for today's game. Red Sox/Toronto and Dodger/Mets games, for two, don't allow any comments.

In case you were wondering.

Yeah, Giants stink!

All things being relative, IF the Giants stink, what does that say about all the teams who have worse records? Or haven't won a World Series in a year or so? All things being relative.

(Techies -- tnx for clearing up the lockout on the Fan Comments.)

I'll grant you, these are not the best years for the National League, but the last time I checked, they grade teams on the curve. That said, the Giants are the third best team in the NL.

Doesn't matter how few runs you score, as long as you suck as much dick as possible after the game.

I think most people prefer fireworks after the games

If they want a true representation of "anemic" they can observe their Bay area neighbor.
