Yankees better off without Jeter?

08:12 AM ET 07.05 | Derek Jeter is back, and on Monday the Yankees lost again -- mere coincidence? Jeter deflected a few tough questions by saying he could not always watch the Yankees play on his cable system at home in Tampa, Fla. But he understands what happened while he was gone. The Yankees won 14 of their 18 games without him. His replacements stumbled in the field but hit better than he has, and the leadoff man, Brett Gardner, shone in his absence. The obvious implication was that the Yankees do not need Jeter to win -- or, worse, that they are better without him. "I don't try to prove anything to anyone," Jeter said. "I try to help our team win. That's what I've always tried to do. [There are] constant questions. This isn't the first year I've been asked questions. I've been asked questions last year, so it's really nothing new to me."
