Deal closer than some insiders realize

08:03 AM ET 07.06 | If the lockout is settled before a preseason, how long will it be remembered? Anxious for free agency and weary of the war of words, the eyes of football fans around the world are starting to glaze over. In other words, the owners and players have you right where they want you. Despite a breakdown in communication and trust that boiled over last week, the two sides are closer to an agreement than many people realize -- perhaps than even some of the people involved realize. That the respective negotiating teams hung in amid the negativity and held a marathon session Thursday and a shorter one on Friday was a deceptively positive sign. As the owners and players prepare to reconvene this week in New York City following the Fourth of July holiday, a deal is very much there for the making.

Sooner or later they have to make a deal, lets hope it's sooner.

who gives a sh**! call the season and let the players and owners have a year with no revenue or pay checks. the NBA starts in late Oct.... that's only 3+ mths away.... but wait, they are likely to delay their season too. hockey anyone??

I'm going to play Thomas from now on and say that I'll believe it when I see it.

On another note, I watched the Toronto Argonauts play the Calgary Stampeders on the NFL channel the other day and, well, no...that wasn't great either.

And the MLB agreement ends in December.

Nothing like a hot new girlfriend to motivate you to get off your ****, huh Tiki?

July 6, 2011  10:51 AM ET

The resentment from some fans over the insane amount of greed will linger. This lockout cost the NFL a lot, even if no games are missed.

July 6, 2011  11:18 AM ET

i tend to believe this.....the thing with the lawyers only in the room the other day? I believe they're finalizing in writing the things they have agreed on so that when all points are settled it won't take as long to finalize it in it's entirety.

As the saying goes, money talks and BS walks. The side standing to lose the most will be the one giving in first.
