Astros will be aggressive sellers

08:09 AM ET 07.06 | Houston can't quite compete with MLB's biggest markets -- at least not in headlines, anyway. For all the talk about the Dodgers and Mets, an ownership change for another franchise is more imminent -- and more relevant to the trade activity that could occur at the July 31 non-waiver deadline. Astros owner Drayton McLane wants to complete his $680 million sale of the club to Jim Crane before that date, but the transaction might not become official that quickly, according to major league sources. The team likely will be an aggressive seller regardless, entertaining offers for left-hander Wandy Rodriguez, center fielder Michael Bourn and others, sources say.

It's about time. I wish we could keep Pence and Bourn but we need prospects and we need 'em bad. Those two along with Wandy should bring some good younger players to the club. I say entertain offers for anyone except Jordan Lyles, Chris Johnson, and Brett Wallace. We are god-awful!

July 6, 2011  09:46 AM ET

Chris Johnson sucks dude why on earth would they not listen to offers for him.

pence and bourn are good young players. bourn is a nightmare on the basepath and a gamesaver in the outfield with his range. pence is a clutch and consistent hitter, hitting .300 and 25 hrs every year, not to mention an absolute hose, i think he has lead the league in outfield assists the last couple of years and is near the top this year. they would be delushional thinking they will get better players in return. keep those guys get rid of el caballo and let bourgeis get on the field. with pence, bourgeis, and bourn that would be one the fastest and best defensive outfield in the league

Trade Carlos Lee? How? His contract is terrible so unless the Astros agree to pay all of this salary I can't see a team trading for him. How likely, with the sale closing right around the corner, is it the franchise would be willing to pay him to leave?

Why get rid of talented young players to get questionable younger players? don't get it...

Depends how close those player are to becoming free agents. If they made the opening day roster 3-4 years ago, the Astros only have them under their control for another 2-3 years. If Houston intends to be a contender by then AND are willing to pay the $$ to keep them by signing a contract extension, then it makes sense to keep them. If one of those aspects is realistic, they should traede those players. Wandy makes alot of sense to trade, he's 32 so they are competitive again in two years, by then he will be 34 and probably not nearly as good as he is right now.

July 6, 2011  11:19 AM ET

yea nobody wants carlos he is overpaid and underperforming but i didnt say trade him i said get rid of him. let him go home to panama and be a rancher. just get bourgeis on the field is all im trying to say. and trading pence and bourn is not the way to go.

bingo my feelings excatly pence is 26 and bourn 25 i think. and already in the tops at their postitions

Doesn't an aggressive seller sell low just to move what ever is for sale? Does in my world.

July 6, 2011  12:10 PM ET

Sell! Sell! sell!

July 6, 2011  12:25 PM ET

I'm all for getting rid of Lee, unless we still have to pay him. Might as well ride out his contract to the bitter end. no one is stupid enouigh to actually trade for him and he does occasionally hit the ball...and i do mean occasionally....

July 6, 2011  12:52 PM ET

I would let go of anyone on the team with exception of Pence, even Lyles, at best he's a number 3 rotation guy. It takes more than a few players to be a contender and they have absolutely nothing in the minor leagues. Their best player on the Triple A squad has been Koby Clemens and he's batting .230 right now!

Their drafts have been so horrible over the last 5-7 years and they have completely depleted their farm system. It will be 2015 probably at the earliest by the time they are even decent.

As for El Caballo, the Horse, Lee, the Astros should make him work at the concession stand so they can at least get some production out of him.

Sellers? the only players that would create interest are the ones you're not willing to move, Pence & Bourn. Wandy is intriguing but you already traded ur ace last year.

The 'stros only hope is to sell the team quickly & eat most of Lee's salary so they can get Borgeis? in the OF.

July 6, 2011  01:09 PM ET

the buyers should make their best offer to this franchise, any pitching for propects? about some good hitters without any big tag??

July 6, 2011  02:04 PM ET

Isn't it frustarting to see the Reds, Pirates, and Brewers who were not as successful as he Astros a few years ago kicking the 'Stros butts now? Talk about moving backward!

July 6, 2011  02:19 PM ET

Selling the team?! NEXT!

July 6, 2011  08:41 PM ET

Wandy to the Rangers?

they could get a decent return for Wandy for two reasons alot less obvious sellers right now, like the Pirates and AZ who were obvious sellers in most of the past years. Along with that alot of teams are close to their respective division leaders or the wild card, so an unusually high number of buyers. They could get a decent return on any trade by driving up the price to multiple bidders.

Drive up the price too far & u'll scare away everybody. There should b several teams interested in acquiring Wandy 4 a post-season run, I'm just not sure the Astros would be willing to completely start over.

Hey, maybe the Cubbies will hold off the Astros for 5th this year in the worst division in MLB.
