Halpern hoped for Caps homecoming

08:21 AM ET 07.07 | Welcome home, Jeff Halpern. When [Halpern] last donned a Capitals' sweater back in 2005-06, both Alex Ovechkin and Brooks Laich were rookies and defensemen Mike Green was trying to dent the NHL roster each time he was called up from Hershey. Now Halpern, 35, returns to a Capitals team that has grown out of the rebuilding process and is led by those players. "I've always kind of hoped to come back to Washington and the fact that they called, I was ecstatic," Halpern said on Wednesday at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. "I have great memories playing here [and] I jumped on the opportunity to come back." The Potomac, Md., native has played for four different teams ... in the five seasons since he last played for Washington but none with the same success that he had in his hometown.

<Yawn>

Welcome to the off-season.

Halpern is, literally, the least of the Caps signings. I like their pick up of Joel Ward. Vokoun and Hamrlik will be regular contributors.

Trust FN to focus on the lowest common denominator. I agree with you, the Caps made great moves in free agency. I called the Vokoun signing at $1.5M a steal before and I still think of it that way.

What a happy story...

Believe it or not, it sort of is a happy story. Wasington is not a historically hot bed of hockey talent or winter sports. Halpern is from just outside town in Rockville, MD. A nice "kid" (at 35 years old). Is he an All-Star? The MVP? Most important cog in the machine? Of course not. But it's a nice story and if he works as hard as he did the last time he was here it'll be a net plus for the Caps.

He'll play hard for the Caps, I don't doubt it. And yes, it makes for a nice story about the local kid playing for the home team. If it helps, I like more than the Wild story.

Aahhh, the old faint praise trick! But, I appreciate the thought. :-).

Don't worry Stranger one of these days we'll get a "stop the presses" Wild thread!! I count the days!

LOL! I don't think I can count that high.

On another note: I think the Blues actually got significantly better with the senior citizens they signed yesterday.

Langenbrunner is an awesome leader who will help teach the Blues kids how to be professionals, and Arnott should help with that too. If either of them have even half a tank left, they should contribute to making that team better overall. Neither one is awesome anymore, but that team now has some on-ice leadership, something they had none of last year.

Watch for a morale boost playing for his preferred team. Should have a good year.
BTW, I agree. I like all the Caps signings so far and dealings.

He actually played his prep school hockey in New Hampshire, his dad would make the drive every week. From there, Princeton and then on to the Caps. Not a "big" story, true, but a good one if you're from around here and I'm glad he's back.

I'm glad he's back too. Sorry he had to go to Princeton. Probably couldn't get in to a good ACC school. :-)

Did you say "good" and "ACC school" in the same sentence? :)
