Free agents shy away from Toronto

10:28 AM ET 07.09 | It's true that prices were inflated and the UFA crop wasn't the best, but useful players such as Brad Richards, Max Talbot, Tomas Fleischmann, Michal Handzus, Christian Ehrhoff (whose rights were acquired in a trade) and Tomas Vokoun were available at positions where Toronto needed help. They all said no, some for reasons other than money. The Leafs have missed the playoffs six straight years and with the improvements that other Eastern clubs have made, there???s no guarantee they can reverse that in the next year or two. For some, winning a Cup in a shrinking window takes precedence. Becoming a Leaf also means co-existing with the often caustic Ron Wilson for eight months.

Warm and fuzzy?

Wot, no BB? Vokoun is about the only guy that I'd really consider. He's already got the fjuff - wot's really needed, is the grit. And, idiot - you've already got one of the top five goaltenders in the league. New management is clearly required (fullstop).

I don't know...Ron Wilson is no less abrasive (nor critical of his players) than (say) Torts.

If anything, one has to take into consideration the rabid/short-tempered/fickle nature of the fans and media in Toronto, coupled with the astronomical cost of living (and the sky-high taxes in Ontario.)

Burke hasn't been overly aggressive in his pursuit of "new blood" recently, either. Toronto isn't the last place on earth free-agents want to go - But, it sure ain't the first...

This is just the Sun, at its' muck-raking best. I do miss the Sunshine Girl, though. :-D

Thanks, Canuck! I needed that! You've outdone yourself ... if that's possible!

My bird goes nuts over baby criying. Maybe if the little sisters that owned the club would rap his knuckles once, he'd quit acting out.

Rotten Ronnie and BB must be sharing the same goat. No other explanation for him remaining as coach of the Leafs..

July 9, 2011  11:18 AM ET

Anyone sold their Sky shares? yet? Wow, who woulda thot that RIM, AND Super Rupert wood both be facing sudden penny-stockdom, simulatque. Isn't that kinda like Steve Jobs AND the Gateses all dying in the same car crash, when they were traveling opposing directions.

BB & Wilson still need to atone for sending Reimer back down, when practically everone else saw that he was their only hope of making the show. Yeah, yeah, I know all about not wanting to rush the kid - but, if a finesse is the only way to make the slam, and you don't do it...

He was voted the coach that they'd least like to play for by the NHLPA.

That's got to count for something.

You're welcome Roamer.

It always brings a smile. :-)

Erhoff never hit the open market...

How could he reject Toronto?

July 9, 2011  11:41 AM ET

Everyone of those players got overpaid and got way more than what Toronto was willing to offer.

Except for maybe Vokoun. But the Leafs don't need a goalie.

It's easy roamer, that crafty owner (what's his name again? oh yes, Pension Fund) doesn't want to pay his $1.4 million dollars while having to pay an coach that can actually win in To***to.

Says a lot about what they think of winning and their fans too. :-(

Great videos Canuck thanks. I especially liked the one with Burke crying in background.

The Leafs don't need a goalie as long as Reimer is the real deal. Small sample size. If he falters, the Leafs blow at every position

What MLSE needs to do is have you start the negotiations Argo you'd inflate their egos so much that they'd jump at the chance to play for your beloved Leafs
