Haney: American unlikely to win British Open

11:21 AM ET 07.10 | Tiger Woods' former coach Hank Hainey has low expectations for Americans at the Open. "I will be totally surprised if an American wins the Open this week," contends Hank Haney, who has coached two men, Woods and Mark O'Meara, to a total of eight major victories. "I expect one of the top European players to win at Sandwich. "In the past, when Americans did win the Open it was invariably because we simply had better players. But that isn't the case any more. Now, the Europeans have more talent. So it will be a pretty large upset if an American does win this week. I mean, what do we have, six players in the top 15?"

It is time for some young American talent to make its way toward the top of golf. You can't keep relying on the old guys....

Picking a European to win a tournament in Europe? That's rocket science at its finest.

Was Ouisthaeizen (sp) in the top 15 last year? Cink the year before?

That's not news. That's the law of averages.

Haney isn't giving us a revelation.

Even someone who is only a casusal follower of the game knows as much.

Only Phil, if he borrows a Taylormade driver from someone, is an Yankee with much of a chance. Callaway makes great irons but they pale in comparison to Taylormade drivers.

If Phil ever gets his act together off the tee-box, then he's worth watching.

My money is on the 22 year old from Ireland.

Even if Phil switched drivers, he still wouldn't have a chance. He hits his irons a mile in the air and while that might work great at Augusta National and on most courses in the US, it never will on a hard links course unless they get four straight days without a breath of wind.

Conclusion: If you watch the coverage or the highlights from Royal St. George's and you see the flags blowing, don't look for Phil on page 1 of the leaderboard.

Never thought about that. Those links courses have alway seemed way different than over here. Plus the coverage is different. A guy hits his shot and it lands somewhere 50 yards short of the green and you don't see a thing until the ball is about to stop on the green.

I'm sure you're right about Phil. If he can't find a fairway in America, he isn't going to find one in Scotland.

He needs to stop his association with Dave Pelz and pick up someone who can help him off the tee. Pelz can't do that. And, if you can't get off the tee, you're dead.

IMHO, I think Phil's problems are more related to his arthritis... but yes, hitting the fairways has not been his strong point lately.

haney is a strange fella... cink won a few years ago and watson almost won the damn thing, the open is what it is - it's wide open for anyone to take except for garcia & phil

I thought Harmon was his swing coach and Pelz only helped him with his short game.

Our golf game has been weak here in the USA lately. Improvement needed

Five of the top seven in the Open were from USA.

Nice to see Clarke win -- good guy.

Indeed. Plus, very few root for guys based (only) on nationality. I was glad to see the kid win at Congressional and Clarke here.

Haney's swing theories suck, he sucked as a coach, and he sucks as a prognosticator. America didn't do too bad at all, did it? But for 2 second place finishers choking on the back 9, it would have been a real contest.
