Bettman aiming to overhaul cap?

08:15 AM ET 07.11 | Did deals such as Brad Richards' have Gary Bettman and the NHL league office smiling? This is what the league wanted to use as evidence that the system is hopelessly broken and tilted in favor of the big markets -- the system, of course, that Bettman, counsel Bob Batterman and the Board invented and painted as a utopia the last time around. Next time, the NHL is going to introduce the ultimate one-size-fits-all cap. Percentage of the gross will be dramatically reduced. The midpoint will essentially become the cap, with the ceiling and floor separated by perhaps $4M-$6M. Deviations of salary within a contract will be kept to a minimum. The cap charge will be defined by the average of the three-to-five highest salaried seasons.

how many teams are still scrambling to hit the salary floor? IS THERE STILL HOPE WE CAN UNLOAD GOMEZ ON SOME BOTTOM-FFEDER TO HIT THE FLOOR?

Sorry, no. I say dump him and move on. Perpetuating that mistake will not solve it or make it go away on its own.

Yeah except that aint what happened. If i'm not mistaken he passed up bigger money to go to NY. How ya gonna fix that? He aint the only player that passed on bigger money to go to a different team. That happened a few times this off-season so far (poor Garth).
If you wanna retool the cap, at least be honest as to why and not throw out Richards' signing as an example of why it needs to be fixed. Apples and oranges.

Bettman, lied to the owners, the last time around, let us see what foolishness he comes up with, in the next C.B.A.. Surely, even this buffoon will have learnt his lesson. Won't he?

Crom - he took less money for NY, yes, but it was other big markets he was turning down. LA and Toronto aren't exactly the bottom feeders.
Gomez should not see NHL ice next year - at least till the playoffs when his $ no longer counts. And personally, I wouldn't even have him then. There are no electric fences keeping him out of the corners or the slot, he skips them by choice. I'd pass on that for team in any situation. He will be the first guy bought out when the new CBA is signed and a window for buy-outs without penalties is given, like last time.

Maybe this is a dumb idea, but if you're going to have a payroll cap, why not total up all the players salaries for the year and just call that your payroll? No averaging for the length of the contract or highest years of the contract.

Crom to be fair, he got 20 mil in the first 12 months of this contract. The leafs might have offered him more overall but he is not going to play out his contract...plus if anything happens in the CBA he just collected 20 mil instead of maybe the 7 mil he would have got from those other teams.

Gary, don't be ignorant, please! Everyone knows whatever you do the market WILL BE towards teams who have money. It's the nature of things.
For instance, see how my Coyotes could not make the moves they needed this summer to keep up with LA and other teams in the West because you, the NHL, owner of the team, did not give Donnie Maloney the money he needed to sign big names! Granted the team should have its own owner by now, but still...
