Wings ready to pounce on '12 free agents

08:16 AM ET 07.11 | The Red Wings went through a somewhat significant rehab project over the past few weeks, but they may be poised to make a bigger splash in 2012. This really wasn't a great free-agent class. It doesn't make sense that this particular group of players would have the capability of making so much cash. But there's something for being in the right place at the right time -- or lucky enough to have the salary cap raised $4 million per team, thereby creating $120 million in extra available cash. What's really scary is what happens next season. There's a reason the Red Wings wanted to be prudent and not overspend on average talent this season: Because next season's potential unrestricted free agent group is so good. Absolutely loaded, actually.

We get them on occasion. This one point to the 2012 free agent class. Can we go through the '11-'12 season first, fellas? Surely we'll have a few things to talk about between now and what will happen on July 1st, 2012.
No Wild thread today though. What a surprise!

Next years class is awful. It's Patrick Sharp, Ryan Suter, then the bitters. And Patrick Sharp and Ryan Suter aren't making it to UFA. Dumb thread.

Don't Weber and Parise become a free agent next year? I thought I read that somewhere.

Then we get the likes of Avery etc. Not a good pool.

This artcile is irrelevant. Most of next year's class will be resigned or traded and signed by 2012's offseason. It always happens that way.

Possible Parise signs 1-year deal right now. In that case, he would be.

Isn't the CBA up at the end of next season? Wouldn't that be the more likely reason to not blow major cash on medium talent, long-term?
Yeesh, 2 comments today about the CBA for me...starting to feel like Henny Penny.

Come on HC, I actually saw the Joke back check during the abortive playoff bid last season. Scared the hell out of me. Maybe someone in the room (JI) had a come to Jesus meeting with him. He could be in the running for comeback player of the year. :-0

You're going to complain about that!? We've been getting Wild and Rangers/Richards out the down low.

Actually this is a good, relevant article to this year, though it's guised as the '12 FA class. This is about the Wings not going crazy this FA summer. As a Wings fan I'm glad Holland was reserved, but as a hockey fan I would have enjoyed this as opposed to the crazy GMs overpaying for everybody (ok, Kenny gave to much to Ericsson, but that's a know quantity to him). This entry is better than most recently because it's about a reasonable GM and not about some no name that the Wild is hoping will step up. Granted, characterizing next year's FA market may be specious.

I don't know what "specious" means, but I agree with the post!

They're talking about what the Wings are going to do a year from now when we could be talking about what the Wild are doing right now! Where are the interns priorities?

Neither of those players will make it to UFA if their teams are smart, and both teams are. Suter shouldn't sign a deal because he will make a boat load after the Preds sign Weber to a huge contract.
But this is stupid...plus doesn't the CBA end after this year? Who knows what it will even look like next year.
