08:13 AM ET 07.12 | Pittsburgh and Anaheim would seem idea trade partners -- in different leagues, essentially on different coasts, and with needs the other could fill. The Pirates and Angels engaged in serious talks earlier this season about a trade that would have sent outfielder/first baseman Garrett Jones to Anaheim and catcher Jeff Mathis to Pittsburgh, major league sources told FOXSports.com. The discussions fell apart after Pirates officials decided they couldn't part with Jones' power bat. Jones hit nine home runs in the first half, second on the team behind All-Star center fielder Andrew McCutchen. Although they didn't come to fruition, the talks reflect how seriously each team is pursuing improvements for a primary area of need.

Oakland has been searching for a power bat for YEARS.

Jones is having a pretty good year. I would think Pittsburgh would want someone better than Mathis for him.

This is the Pirates MO. Get a compelling young team going and then dump the players for prospects. Their game has always been to keep payroll low and make money off revenue sharing. Although I guess they have new ownership that's taking a new direction.

i am glad this did not happen.

I'm not sure Jones is a big part of the Pirates future, so if they can get a useful piece for him, they should pull the trigger.

How old is this story? Two months? One month?

Trumbo is on fire, Wells bat has heated up, Hunter is driving the ball as well!!

I'm all for dumping Mathis, but this story seems aged and tired.

Another Twin that got away :(

Why would the Angels want another 1b/OF? they have Trumbo & Morales @1st, & they're loaded in the OF already. Wouldnt make sense.

every team its always seeking better offense on their own lineups, except the angels have a GM who without any type of game plan has make as many mistakes every time that he makes a trade or a deal for a long term for whatever reason the GM ends being the weak slink!!

July 12, 2011  03:42 PM ET

the angels could do much better, only if at least the halos should make the right thing to do like, sign the right player, at the right deal, without any type of bad output or backfire to the franchise, the sad part its that the GM couldn't pull the right string, after all the halos do miss alot bill stoneman who did very good job with the minors and with the angels franchise, something that the current GM hasn't been able to do!!

american league should beat the national league with good pitching and well disciplined lineup!!!

Ya, except for the fact that all those recent trades were a part of Huntington's rebuilding strategy for the current team. Tell me, how are Nate Mclouth, Xavier Nady, and Jason Bay all doing right now? Also, all of those Pirates teams that were trading for prospects were well out of contention by the trade deadline. The Bucs may not even have to do anything at the deadline because they'll soon be getting Tabata, Doumit, and Alvarez back in to the lineup.
